A New Leaf - 1970s Movie Mayhem

One day only! "A New Leaf" is part of the Edmonton Film Society's 2013 Winter series - Women in Danger. Edmonton Film Meetup has a film outing the same day and they don't like to schedule conflicting events so here we are at TGs!

"One of the Film Society's favourite black comedies. Playboy Matthau, suddenly broke, must down-size. No way! The only solution: marry a wealthy woman, then quickly arrange an "accident" for her. Settling on a clumsy, socially awkward botanist, he puts his plan into action."

Please meet in the lobby of the Royal Alberta Museum between 7:30 and 7:45 pm outside the auditorium doors.

I will have a yellow and orange fabric sunflower on my coat or shirt for identification. Maria will be there as well with her flower bouquet. If you see anyone with artificial flowers, then you've found us!

Tickets are $6 for Adults, $5 for Seniors and Students. Admittance for Children 12 and under is $3. CASH Only.

A complete listing for the 2013 Winter Series is available online at: http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/events/movies/movies.cfm.

I'm not sure if any of you are old enough to have watched some of W. C. Field's movies. (He was even before my time.) Some of Matthau's acting draws directly on Field's personna: Grumpy guy who hated kids and was always under siege in his dealings with women.

I loved this film. I'd never heard of Elaine May until now, but I'm so glad that I have. Wow! And I just loved Walter Matthau's acting and her acting and the brilliant, subtle humour of the entire movie. Great company and post-movie chat!

It was a good movie to watch but our post-movie chat revealed its other subtleties to me!

That's exactly why I love discussing the movies afterwards--we can throw our brains together into one pot and exchange ideas and thoughts and create new ones based on our collaborative discussion.

I had forgotten how brilliant and revolutionary Elaine May was as a writer, director and actor. It was truly an uphill battle for her to establish herself in a male dominated Hollywood in the 70s. She pioneered an improv style that heavily influenced people like Steven Martin, Lily Tomlin, Seinfeld.

I had no idea she was that pioneering. I will have to look up her other works. Maybe even Ishtar!

I will not be at the movie this evening. I'm still quite sick with a chest cold. Please accept my apologies and hope you can find your other hosts Maria and Carmen. If you have a smartphone and get this message, please let these ladies know I won't be there. Cannot find their cell numbers! Enjoy the show:) Victoria

This is really tentative but I will see how things work out. I would only be able to come for the film, not dinner.
