Please join us for a meetup for Effective Altruism Chicago! For this meetup, Marcus Davis of Rethink Priorities (https://www.rethinkpriorities.org/) will present on a fascinating topic:

Determining whether invertebrates have the capacity to experience pain and pleasure in a morally significant way is a complex and difficult undertaking. There is tremendous uncertainty at virtually every level at which one might investigate the matter. Rethink Priorities has attempted to create a comprehensive collection and analysis of the existing scientific studies relevant to the subject. Drawing on Rethink's work, Marcus will try to sketch out initial answers to the following questions: what is the evidence, what does it imply about invertebrate sentience, and, given moral and practical uncertainty about the importance invertebrates, what, if anything, should we do next to address invertebrate welfare?
