Are you motivated to do something that makes the world a better place? Do you want to have the biggest impact you possibly can? We each have limited resources with which to affect the world. Figuring out how to invest these resources to accomplish the most good can be difficult, involving a lot of research and strategy. Fortunately, we don't have to do it alone.
Effective Altruism is a growing movement of people looking to maximize their impact on the world. We take our moral obligations toward others seriously and look for ways to do good for others that wouldn't otherwise be done. Whether you consider yourself a dedicated effective altruist, are curious about the economic and philosophical ideas behind the movement, or just want to do a little more good when you can, we're excited for you to join us!
EA-NYC has been meeting since 2014 to discuss these topics and build and reinforce the local EA community; as of 2018 we've grown to more than 1000 members across Meetup and Facebook and have been featured in the Wall Street Journal.

- Online Reading Discussion Group: Suffering-Focused Ethics by Magnus VindingTBA - Zoom, New York, NY
Please use this link to officially sign up - you will not receive registration details unless you fill out this quick Airtable form - https://bit.ly/3PsSI7n
Are pleasure and suffering of equal and opposite value? On what ethical basis should we prioritize opportunities?
In Magnus Vinding's Suffering-Focused Ethics, Vinding argues that the reduction of suffering deserves special priority and guides the reader through the ethical implications of this claim. In addition to a comprehensive analysis of ethical and meta-ethical views, Vinding presents practical steps we can take to improve society.
Join the EA NYC community for another thoughtful discussion on metaethics! The conversation will be open-ended and participant-driven, so no need for an advanced understanding of philosophy. Simply read the work and come with your thoughts, questions, feelings, and ideas!
After checking out the book, join the Effective Altruism NYC community to discuss! You can prep and share your own questions for the group, or feel free to join for a participant-driven conversation. You can also join the #reading-group channel in our Slack for more conversation before and after the event! https://bit.ly/eanycslack

**Please read the description for recommended pre-event preparations**
Which policies and regulations are preventing the US from reaching social progress? How can laws and standards be improved to boost global welfare?
Join this month's discussion group meeting and bring your thoughts and ideas on regulatory justice reforms (including criminal justice, immigration/borders, land use, etc.)! We welcome *EVERYONE* to bring their perspectives on the topic as well as any prompts/questions you might have for others.
This month, we're especially excited to recommend some quality resources for the discussion. We strongly encourage anyone interested in attending to read a few introductory materials (30 minutes of core content with additional optional content available) before the discussion.
The goal of the readings is simply to ground the conversation so that participants can make the most of the event - but if you feel that you already have some background in the topic(s) (or if you simply want to join anyway), we would love for you to join the event!
