What we're about

Effective altruism is a growing social movement and intellectual project founded on the desire to make the world as good a place as it can be, the use of evidence and reason to find out how to do so, and the audacity to actually try.

Effective altruism is about using evidence and reason to find out how to help others most effectively- see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_altruism . By carefully considering what we value, and by working together to find the best ways of achieving that, we can each do an amazing amount of good.

Through changing mindsets, priorities and attitudes towards a scientific approach to aiding others we can effectively address issues such as global poverty, animal welfare, and catastrophic risk. We have the resources to resolve many of the worst problems facing our species and this planet, we just need the willingness and knowledge be better allocate those resources. By committing to asking questions, relying on evidence and using reason we can even take steps towards addressing moral problems we are currently oblivious to. As effective altruists we seek to drive forward moral progress and put it to use improving the world.

If you'd like to talk to someone local about any aspect of effective altruism - whether by email or over a coffee - get in touch! We're a new group and eager to get a community started.
