Potluck Holiday Treats – Savory & Sweet

Activities & a Sing-along for the Kids

Music by Members of the EA Musician’s Collaborative

Bring Some Food to Share & Join in the Fun!

This event is a little different that prior events. We will still have a music sign-up sheet, and we will still have our normal mix of performance and jam. We will also have a "Kid's Corner" and a special sing-along for them. This is the perfect event to bring your friends and extended family. It will be fun, and for a really good cause.

It’s time to celebrate the season by singing, sharing and being together – as a family, not just as individuals.

That special time of year is approaching when people agonize, “Now, what do I say to my neighbors/co-workers/friends to acknowledge the holiday they celebrate without insulting them?” Music is in all of us, regardless of what or how we celebrate – so why not share it with others?

Join us for our next musical meetup, “A Family Friendly Winter Celebration of Music,” to sing whatever seasonal song is in your heart, in your head or on your lips. A Christmas carol in Latin? A Hanukah song in Hebrew? A Kwanzaa tune in Swahili? Maybe something that’s wonderfully wintry about snowmen and sleigh rides in English (Old, Middle or Modern)? Don't forget about all of the wonderful pop and rock tunes of the season - or Rachel's personal favorite, the holiday novelty song.

In addition to jamming on "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" and singing our favorite traditional songs, we are planning a sing along with kids' holiday favorites (Frosty, Jingle Bells, The Dreidel Song, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, etc).

If you have kids, like kids, like to act like a kid, or just want to kid around, making music with friends, then this event is for you!

We are planning a special attended kid's corner, where the young ones can hang out and give Mom or Dad a chance to perform, or just jam a bit.

MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW!

Please contact Rachel Henk if you are interested in helping to plan this event or in helping out with the kids .

Alex (9 years old) and his two school buddies went with our family friend and loved it. I was so disappointed to not make it, but a nasty flu bug kept me at home. According to Alex and friends it was a lot of fun - good food, fun activities, and great music. The kids loved the sing-a-long and our friend Mike was impressed with the music.

I will help out with the Kids Corner (lots of experience with it having been an elementary school teacher and also working in a library). I can bring along a simple craft for the kids to do if I know the number attending. Also, we will be bringing at least one other 9 year old boy if not 2 (Alex's best buds). Do we bring the gifts for Santa to hand out for each child?

Hi Rachel, Just wanted to remind you that I am happy to help out with kids activities at the Elks Club (as we discussed a couple of months ago). I'll bring some of the hula hoops and flower sticks I make, along with scarves that can be tossed around to music. Here is my Certificate of Liability Insurance for the Elks, if needed: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B872LT2wibBBQzFtMlpPMGpLY1k/edit?pli=1 Insurance covers the interactive clowning activities I offer and Louie's tricks -- but I won't bring him since it's indoors and dogs are probably not allowed. Thanks for being such a great organizer :) Looking forward! Sue

Can anyone play celtic harp (or acoustic guitar) and/or maybe flute on Loreena McKennick's Snow? We are ordering the music, and it can be heard on Grooveshark.com

    December 2, 2012

  • Rachel H.

It is really exciting watching this all come together. We are getting lots of interests from the folks at the Elks, so hopefully we will be able to raise loads of money for Sandy relief. Steve Georges and Row Hess have volunteered to lead the two kids' Sing-Alongs - we hope everyone will join in! The music list is filling out, and everything from Elvis to Enya is represented. Check out the new updated sign-up sheet posted today. We still need volunteers to help out in the kid's corner: adults and teens needed for approx one hour slots. We will have games, coloring sheets, etc. Also - we need plenty of food. Please start posting to the event discussion with what you will be bringing. I could use 2 or 3 people to keep an eye on the tables, to refill chips etc. and generally keep them from looking like a disaster area.- Please reach out to me if you have any questions

Row - I would try to stick to things the 10 and under crowd probably knows, Up on the Rooftop, 12 Days of Christmas, Holly Jolly Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, Rudolph & Oh Chanukah will probably fill the 15 minutes.

    November 27, 2012

    • Rowena H.

Sorry Rachel, But every time I tried to post anything on here, it wanted me to join again! I've changed email addresses, so it added to the confusion. Steven said the songs are short, so I should have extra, just in case. Also, I need accompaniment, & do I make & print up enough lyric sheets for everyone?

      November 27, 2012

  • Rowena H.

I will be doing a time-slot of leading the children's sing-a-long. Possible song selections include: Silver Bells, Up on the Rooftop, 12 Days of Christmas, Holly Jolly Christmas, White Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, Jolly Old St Nicholas, Rudolph & Oh Chanukah. STEVEN G--WHAT DO U THINK? ANYONE CARE TO POVIDE MUSICAL ACCOMPNIMENT?

    November 26, 2012

  • Steven G.

OK - Now that we are starting to fill up the music entries, time to think about food. To get this discussion started, I volunteer to bring a tray of my daughter's famous chocolate brownies.

The Music Sign-up Sheet is now posted under More\Files. This file is read-only, so e-mail or message Rachel for a slot. I will post updated lists often, so you can see what others have closen. CLAIM YOUR FAVORITES EARLY!!

Please note that we have set aside two 15 minute slots for kid-focused sing-alongs. Steve Georges has volunteered to lead one, but we still need a leader for the 2nd. As always, you can participate in two ways. 1)Performance style - you perform as a solo or collaborate with one or more musicians from EA and play as a closed group

    2) Jam style or Sing-along- you lead a jam with the idea of engaging most other musicians in the room, open style or directed (e.g., I'd like the congas to play on beats '2' and '4' of each measure.)

Music slots will go from 2:20-5:30, 10 minutes each. The 10 minutes includes your setup time (alternatively, you can come at 2pm to the party, to set up equipment ahead). We end perfomances at 5:40 to allow for clean-up

      November 16, 2012

    • Rachel H.

Garry - reach out to Julie. Maybe she would be interested. She played Seasons of Love for us at the last one.
