NYC Beginners Guitar Orchestra First Practice

Beginners are welcome! Just come and I'll have a part for you to play!

Requirements are:

  • You must bring your guitar (acoustic or electric; you must bring your own practice amp or small battery operated ok)
  • You must be able to follow one of the 3 charts (tablature or standard notation) - we'll go over each one multiple times until everyone is comfortable with its own part.
  • You must know the very basics of your instrument

BASS PLAYERS: sorry...there will be no bass amps..., however you can join if you play an acoustic bass.

SONG: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana

GUITAR 1: Simple accompaniment; ideal for beginners playing 3 years or less; open chords, power chords and simple bass lines.

GUITAR 2: Melody and add-ons; ideal for players comfortable with rhythm involving eighth notes, eighth rests, basic lead skills, comfortable with strumming.

GUITAR 3: Solo and fxs; ideal for players comfortable with lead guitar, sixteenth notes, ties, slides, bends, hammer ons/pull offs and able to manage their instrument levels, fx pedals and dynamics.

Charts are uploaded under "More" tab> "Files"
There is sheet music (tablature and standard notation) for each of the 3 guitar parts as well as mp3s for practice. The audio is from MIDI so, don't panic, it will sound way better with real guitars!

What to do:
Choose your part and start getting familiar with the song structure (also uploaded as a pic)

Show up to practice and have fun!

Cheers!

Hi Eliane, I will definitely do my best to follow along. I have a few questions, about the A chord, and D chords, and B minor 7.

Plus I hope there's time to go over some Pentatonic Scales.

Looking forward to a fun time and meeting everyone!

I will look at them this week. If I make it, I will just bring an acoustic flat top. Thanks.

Where are the tabs and MP3s? Electric or acoustic guitar? Amps?

    May 18, 2013

    • Sharon

On the top of this page, under the red banner is the "more" link. The tabs and mp3 are under "files".

Hi Paul, were you able to find the tabs/mp3s? You're welcome to use an electric guitar but you'll need to bring in a portable amp, even those battery operated ones...!

I feel I should say in all honesty that I'm a technological "invalid"with a woefully anachronistic dynosoar of a computer, and incapable of seeing anything to work with beforehand;I should stress that although I have some retention of basic chords,I'd have to be treated as a beginner;I'm hoping that's going to be ok (even with the coming in "cold" confoundation),because I'd really like to begin to play again in this project (group process in music fascinates me!)....

Hi guys. I'm a lower-intermediate level bass player who is looking to play with other. Already occasionally jam - can play or fake most songs. Would be interested in doing the orchestra on June 1. I do already play that song.

Hi Howie, it'd be fine, just go with guitar chart 1, can you follow the tabs?

      May 17, 2013

  • Jason

I'll see if I can make it. Sounds like a reasonable time!

Cool. I took all 3, but I think part 1 is my skill set.

      May 16, 2013

  • Eliane D.

Also, the tempo on the mp3s is at 80bpm (way slower than the original) for practicing purposes only.

    You sure about the time?

    May 13, 2013

  • Ted

Eliane, I have the same question, ... before I RSVP I want to confirm that you wrote the correct time for June 1st.

    11:00PM...? Is this correct?

I know we are all just getting started with this group, but whether it is morning or evening, I do not believe that 1 hour will be enough. For sure the 1 hour will go by quickly.

    May 13, 2013

    • Eliane D.

It is at 11am and it's for an hour, the charts will be uploaded and people will get a chance to come in somewhat prepared. This is the first one and we will go from there, if it's too short we'll make it longer for the next one. Thanks!

    Ola Eliane,

This group is a great idea! Alas, I won't be able to make it on May 22nd. My Monday -- Thursday evenings are full until about mid-June.
I will definitely make the next time. Hopefully we can also get some weekends in the mix. Looking forward to jamming with each of you!

    Obrigado!

    • Eliane D.

Oi Ted! I will try weekends as well, this is a new experience and will take its form as we go...obrigada!
