What we're about

**Please note: because of Covid 19, all of the ESL groups will be held via Skype. No meetups will be held in person, for now.**

These sessions are led by Jill, a former English teacher. All sessions cost $3. There are 2 types of sessions:

1. ESL practice sessions:

Each practice session is offered 3 times a week: on Saturday at 11:15 am, Tuesday at 6:15 pm, and Tuesday at 7:15 pm. You may sign up for one of the 3 sessions.

Each session costs $3 per person. People who attend may have the option of prepaying for the following meetup(s) in order to ensure that they get a spot. This can be discussed with the group facilitator. There are spots for 9 people at each session. Sign-ups for any empty spots will open one week before the meetup. (Sign-ups for Tuesday sessions will open at 9:15 pm Tuesday, and sign-ups for Saturday sessions will open at 1:15 pm Saturday afternoon.) Once you have signed up, please send me a meetup message with your Skype name. I will then send you instructions for sending the $3 etransfer to me.

The Practice Session is intended for those who are still actively learning the English Language. It is an informal, oral English conversation session (no homework!!) with an emphasis on both grammar and pronunciation. We learn and practice common idioms and expressions, verb tenses and vocabulary. We also work on English pronunciation, focusing on improving the pronunciation of those hard-to-pronounce words and sounds, and getting rid of that little bit of accent that lingers. It is a casual, non-threatening informal group . All levels of English learners are welcome!

2. ESL Book Discussions:

The Book Discussions are held once every 4 weeks, on Thursday evenings at 7 pm. This is a group for English learners, but is not focused on grammar or pronunciation. Instead, we will be participating in spontaneous group discussions about a Canadian novel. It is intended to help you develop more fluency in your spontaneous speech, improve your written and spoken comprehension skills, in addition to learning more about Canadian culture by reading and discussing Canadian literature. Each month I select a novel by a Canadian author and post the information on the meetup page. If you want to attend:

a) sign up for the meeting on meetups,

b) send me a message with your Skype name,

c) I will send you instructions for sending the $3 etransfer to me

d) get a copy of the book (available at the Winnipeg Public Library) and read it prior to the meeting.

If you would like further info about this group, feel free to contact Jill. She will gladly answer any of your questions.
