This meetup is for people who live with Celiac Disease and their family, friends, and supporters.
My teenage daughter is Celiac, and though I can find lots of ways to live gluten free, I find surprisingly little moral support or encouragement groups in Oregon, let alone Eugene. Eugene needs an Anxiety and Depression support network for Celiacs / Gluten - Free required people. Being a teen is hard enough, but when you have to explain why you can't come to someones birthday because they're going to play some kind of wheat flour in balloons popping game (I have no idea what this is), and flour will be floating in the air for hours, and they respond: 'Well, your life sucks.', it's really hard. I think this group can be open to any Celiac and any age, but I don't want to water this down with people for whom Gluten Free is merely a choice. I really want to support the people who understand the long term risks and aren't willing to just throw up all night, to hang with friends. And I would like to focus on the support children and teens need to navigate this difficult hand they've been dealt. It will take time to grow, but I would like to have adults who can talk about their experiences and how they handle the pressures.
This is not a food share or recipe share group, though I'm sure the topic will come up, and it's good to know what you need, especially for the newly diagnosed, but support is the primary purpose.
I want a safe place were people can come a talk about how hard it's been, empathize with each other, understand that they are not alone, and move forward knowing there is at least a place they con come on occasion.
This is new for me, and Eugene. Please join and help shape what this will become.
