Potato Bar and Games

  • Oct 19, 2013 · 12:00 PM
  • JJ's Place - North Eugene - I'll e-mail location later

Can you just imagine a lunch of steaming spuds, piled with mounds of the best toppings created in the history of the universe? It's a cosmic idea! (Thanks Liz for the idea.)  To make it a well-rounded event, we will also relax and play games. It's that time of year when some nice indoor fun hits the spot. This would be a good event for kids I think. Or if people would prefer to watch a movie, we could do that instead/too.

We will have to coordinate this event a bit as we will need some people to bring baked potatoes and some people to bring plant-based toppings. It might be nice to have three kinds of potatoes: white, white-fleshed sweet, and orange-fleshed sweet.

Topping Ideas Include
* chopped veggies like: broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers, etc.
* vegan cheeze sauces
* chili
* sliced olives
* sliced mushrooms
* vegan bacon bits
* vegan sour cream
* vegan parmesan
* vegan sausages or peperoni

If we get a lot of attendees (say more than 10), maybe someone could bring some cookies or brownies for dessert.

Games: I have Bannanagrams, which is a great game for a group of people and can be played at it's own level. I also have Jenga, another good group game, plus Scrabble and several other adult games. For the young at heart, I have several kid games, not mention decks of cards that can be used to build card houses if games are not in order and Duke keeps a proper distance. :-)

WARNING: I will send an e-mail on Wednesday October 16 with directions to my house and further instructions for the event. If you do not receive this e-mail, be sure to e-mail me so that I can try again from my e-mail instead of from the Meetup site. Sometimes Meetup e-mails get caught in SPAM filters. So, keep a look out.

Hope to see you all there!

    I think sweet potatoes would be great--I was thinking of perhaps bringing some of those as well, and the topping I'm going to try to make, I think may actually go better on sweet potatoes than on white potatoes.

      Great Jeanette. Sounds good to me. :-) Thanks!

    I'll bring 2 russet potatoes in addition to the sliced olives, vegan sour cream and vegan butter that I mentioned earlier in the post.

    What about sweet potatos? I don't know if you can bake them like baked potatos, but they sure are tasty! I could bring 5 or 6.

      Glenn: I think sweet potatoes are perfect! There are two types - white fleshed and orange fleshed. The white fleshed are sweet, but not as sweet as the orange. And the white-fleshed sweet have a similar consistency to regular white potatoes. It's your choice to bring either one or a few of each kind. As far as I know, they bake up just like a white potato. Someone else can chime in if I'm wrong. Great idea Glenn! Thanks for offering.

    I can bring baked potatoes. I will also bring seasoned cauliflower. THere are a few yummy items I may include as well.

    • JJ

      Anne: That's great! Thank you so much for both the potatoes and the cauliflower. I'm looking forward to trying your cauliflower seasonings. Maybe I'll ask you for the recipe as I'm always trying to find ways to get myself to eat more veggies. Thanks again. - JJ

    I will be bringing some potatoes
    And a bowl of diced broccoli and red
    onion combo, and some garlic and
    chive vegan butter. : )

    October 16, 2013

    • JJ

      Juanita: Perfect. Thank you! I love the idea of some chive vegan butter, plus the other stuff. Are we going to eat well or what!

    How many baked potatoes do we have coming so far? I can bring some too, but don't want to end up with too many extra. I will also bring vegan sour cream, Earth Balance buttery spread, and sliced olives.

    October 16, 2013

    • JJ

      Marilyn: Great question. I just don't know the answer. We have 3 people for sure who have said that they would bring potatoes, but only one who said how many. I also have 1 person who is going to bring something of a potato casserole and other person who might do the same. And one person who is not sure yet if she is bringing potatoes, a topping, or both. So, I would say, you just tell me what you want to do (or leave it up in the air). I'll do the best I can to judge if we will have a gap and try to fill it as best I can. And I'll keep my fingers crossed that it will all work out in the end. :-) Thank you for your post! Your topping ideas sound SOOOO good. (Also, now I can cross olives off my mental list of things. Whew.) - JJ

    I can bring cashew cheese sauce. Maybe tofu cubes or something else....

    October 16, 2013

    • JJ

      Yumm! Perfect. Thanks for letting us know. I'll cross "cashew cheese sauce" off the list of things I was thinking of making. :-) Thanks.

    I might be a maybe. If it is nice like they say it is going to be I am going to take my camera and try to get some fall foliage photos taken.

    Can you clarify the time for me please? I see 12:00 in one place and 7-10 pm in another. Thank you!

    October 13, 2013

    • JJ

      Marilyn: Sorry for any confusion. This is definitely a lunch - with 12:00 as the start time. That's funny that you see two different things. I only see the 12:00. Anyway, I hope this clarifies for good. :-) - JJ

    Ducks game isn't until 7pm, so Al and I will be there! I'll bring four baked potatoes (two for us and two extras) and some kind of topping.

    October 11, 2013

  • Cindy

    I'll have to meet up with everyone the following Saturday. A volunteer op recently surfaced to drive boaters at the Duck Race this Saturday. Sorry to miss the Potato Bar!

      Cindy: I'll miss seeing you. But thank you so much for remembering to change your RSVP. That's a great help in managing these events. Have fun with your boating. Can't pass that up!
