1. Best Overall
2. Best Application of Fiore
3. Best Chivalric Comportment
Head - Fencing mask minimum. Escrima-style or medieval helmets that do not permit the spear tip from penetrating the face are acceptable.
Neck - Must be defended by the helmet, by a quilted coif, or by a gorget.
Body - Hvy gi or gambeson/zuparello. Chest protection recommended for women. T-shirts or skin not allowed.
Hands - Gauntlets recommended; minimum padded gloves for spear fights, Lacrosse or similar for mis-matched weapons apart from daga (single-sword or sword in two hands).
Groin - Athletic cup or gender-appropriate equivalent. (no, we're not going to check, but...)
Legs - NO SHORTS.
Only soft-soled shoes, medieval style clothing and shoes recommended but not required.
LANZE - We are using the Revival tips on spear shafts of hardwood or rattan, ranging from 7/8" diameter - 1 1/8" diameter. NO SOFTWOODS. Bo staves are generally workable and are available at the Kailua martial arts supply house. Brian has spear tips here on the island for $30.
LANZE rules - Only thrusting attacks are allowed. Slashing with the spear at any target other than the opponent's spear shaft is expressly forbidden (on account of the low armour requirement). Strikes must be controlled. No throws or locks, but simple hands-on are allowed. Grasping the opponent's spear shaft is allowed, but not the head. Tripping with the shaft is forbidden.
Combatants who strike their opponent with the shaft forfeit that fight immediately.
CHIVALRIC FIGHTING: All fighting is to be conducted in the spirit of good-natured, hard fighting with our fellow enthusiasts. A combatant's responsibility and respect for his/her opponent must be the highest concern and all combatants are expected to keep their opponent's safety above their own desire to win at all times. Any action which, in the eyes of the tournament sponsors (the SSG officers), violates the chivalric rule may result in loss of the fight or expulsion from the tournament. Poor conduct will not be tolerated. Any safety infraction, such as striking with the shaft, not accompanied by appropriate respect for the opponent will result in immediate expulsion.
