Inaugural meeting - Book choosing

  • 5 days ago · 7:30 PM

Wow, looks like we've got our group already! Let's meet up soon to introduce ourselves to each other and choose our books. We'll meet in a pub in central Exeter, but I haven't figured out which one yet.

Come prepared to suggest a modernist or post-modern book you would like the group to read and we can put together a list. If you want to come but can't think of a title, don't worry; come anyway.

We can also discuss how it's going to work and how frequently we want to meet. I'm imagining something like monthly would work best for most people, and if the person who chose the book acts as that month's discussion leader that might work well too.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Emma

I am really sorry but on getting home last night I realised that I have double-booked myself for the 4th - if all else fails I will come on the 4th next time but as I have already paid for the other event I've booked that day I wonder if it would be possible to move that one - I don't want to alter the regular day in general but as this one will be my book choice of course I have to be there! Really sorry! In general I have a commitment on Tuesdays but in that week (2-6) and the one after (9-13) I could do any day except Weds. Thanks again to Emma for organising.

Nice to meet you last night Maria.
It's fine with me to shift the January meeting on a week to the following Weds if that works (although I can't do the same for the Feb date).

Hi Emma, sorry, I can no longer come... my rota changed and now it's a bit too late for me (I start work at 5am). Hope it's a good first one and maybe I can join another. If a book is chosen, would you mind posting it anyway so we can still read it for the next one? thanks x

Hello everyone! Looking forward to meeting those who can make it tomorrow evening. If you can't make it, hopefully see you next time. Don't forget you can still nominate a book if you would like. Just post it here.

Thanks for organising. I run my own book group on Wednesdays in term time, but may be able to make some sessions in school holidays. I hope the first session goes really well.

Thanks, Claire, and it's my pleasure. We don't necessarily have to stick to Wednesdays. If you want to nominate a book, just let me know and hopefully you'll be able to make it next time!

I'm not very cognisant of venues in Exeter (I'm based in Sidmouth), but I went to a meet up at the Globe Inn, Newtown, Exeter and thought it had a great atmosphere & even on a Friday night was not manically busy...

They also have a side and upstairs room which was free to hire although I imagine that was because of the numbers attending the meet-up. However, you never know, esp. if its a week day eve.

Funny, that is exactly the place I have in mind!

Thanks Emma - I appreciate that it will never be a time or day that suits everyone! A good few years ago now, I studied an OU literature course and I really enjoyed Emile Zola, 'Germinal'. so my suggestion is a book by him. I recently picked up a copy of 'The Earth', so that would be my nomination....

Sadly clashes with another of my regular meet-ups...

Oh no, sorry, Becky. If you want to nominate a book for the group, just let me know. We can try to arrange the next meeting do that it doesn't clash.
