What we're about

This group is for those that are interested in unique and unusual photography techniques and styles that are not common in every group. All skill levels are welcome, but experience is a plus as we are doing more advanced type of shoots that require some knowledge of the camera and additional equipment.

Meetups that are coming up feature such subjects as:

- Steel Wool Photography
- Night shooting and Star trails
- Long exposures and Time-Lapses
- Car Rig Photography and Action Shooting
- Abstract and Macro Photography
- Studio Lighting and Flash Photography
- Infrared, HDR and post processing

We now have Facebook page for the group so stop by and share your work. Help us grow.

And starting from September 2015 the group has its own page on Flickr. Its Public with invites only membership, so send me your info if you would like to be invited in.

To keep this group free, we are currently looking for sponsors. If you have a suggestion, please send the organizer a message.

Experiment with Street Photography

Needs a location

Hello Everyone,

The topic for this event is Street Photography which is essentially a candid photography made in public places. It is considered an art form that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public situations. Timing can be key aspect of the craft with the aim to create images at decisive and touching moments.
Street photography is not necessary about the streets or urban environment in general, but rather about capturing life as it happens (on the streets). It also might be absent of people and can be of an object or environment where the image projects a likeness of a human character or a connection to one.

Photographers of any level are welcome as its pretty easy from a technical stand point. Here are some tips for those who are just starting out:

• Be patient
• Get closer (don’t shoot from across the street)
• Talk to people (get involved)
• Don’t shoot continuously
• Not everything from eye level (work on angles)
• Be aware of composition
• Know the laws (legal aspects of Street Photography)
• Be respectful (some may not want their pictures taken)

Here is what you would need to participate:

  1. DSLR or Mirror-less of any kind
  2. Prime 35 or 50mm lens are preferred, but anything works.

Event meeting location is:

In front of
Pretty Bird Restaurant
146 Regent St,
Salt Lake City, UT 84111.

We will be there for about 20 minutes before splitting up in smaller groups and moving forward with our adventure. If you are new to this type of photography, don't be late as I would be going over some techniques and ideas in person and it would be the best opportunity to ask questions.

See you there.

Experiment with Steel Wool Photography and Light Painting

Needs a location

Hey Everyone,

As the title says, this is The Experiment with Steel Wool Photography and this one will be inside a tunnel. Location I picked is pretty safe, has very little foot traffic and plenty of parking near by. Meeting in front of the church/synagogue and shooting location is on the Parleys Trail itself.

There is a map uploaded giving you guide how to find us if you arrive after 9:20pm.

  • Schedule:

9:00PM Meeting in front of a synagogue. Park on the street.
9:20PM Moving towards shooting location. Image Map attached.
9:40PM Starting the shooting portion of the event

• What to bring:

  1. DSLR or Mirrorless Camera. Bridge type of camera will work to.
  2. Since its inside the tunnel any type of lens will work.
  3. Sturdy Tripod - You need a tripod. You won't be able to participate without one.
  4. Steel wool of 0000 grade. Can be bought online or in any large retailer like Walmart.
  5. Regular metal whisk, rope(or fine metal chain) and a lighter.
  6. For safety: Wear protective clothing, long sleeves and pants and cover your hair (no hair spray!). You can also wear a hoodie so your neck would be covered. Since the sparks do not burn out immediately on contact, there is a chance of singeing your clothes or exposed skin.
  7. Glasses or goggles is a must to protect your eyes.
  8. Flashlight on your head (required)
  9. Bug spray(Optional)
  10. Bring other lights, glow sticks, lasers, fog machine if you have it... whatever you think may be cool at night. (optional)

• Important to know:

If you are new to this type of photography it would be best if you know how to set everything to manual in your camera settings before you have to do it in the dark on the day of the event. Manual mode+no auto iso+full control over your shutter and aperture.

Let me know if you have any questions.
