ExploreTech Toronto Meetup - March 2016

Explore Tech Toronto is about exploring and celebrating diversity in the tech industry - in the technology we use, the roles and people. You will get a chance to hear from a variety of speakers who are working on interesting technical projects. We will feature speakers in different roles from Project Owners, designers to backend, devops & IT.

> Featured talks this month

Christina Truong will be presenting Back to Basics: Building a strong front-end foundation:
Grunt, Gulp, Angular, Ember, Bootstrap, React, Sass, Less, Stylus... the possibilities are endless.  Trends come and go but at the core of all these tools and frameworks is still HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Understanding best practices such as naming conventions, modular code organization and optimization techniques will help to make your projects flexible and scalable. Building a strong foundation is key to being able to confidentially use more advanced tools and apply best practices to any project, no matter what tools you choose.

Ryan McColeman from Unata will talking about Staying Sane on the JavaScript Framework Roller Coaster Ride: Things change very quickly in the world of front end JavaScript frameworks. How do you filter out all the hype and focus on what is important when choosing a framework you should learn to improve your skill set? In this talk we will look at some of the strengths and weaknesses of Ember, Angular and React, as well as discussing strategies to help pick what framework is best for you right now.

> Goal

Creating speaking opportunities for new speakers in Toronto’s technology community and to help achieve true gender balance within our local tech leadership. Our events will showcase at least 50% female speakers.

> Speakers

> Format

2 x 20 min talks with time in between to mingle.

Come join us for some food, drinks, mingling & listen to some interesting talks!

I found the two talks very relevant. I often find myself overwhelmed with myriads of frameworks (interestingly they are mostly JS related). I think to combat this feeling, we really need to go back to basic as Christina advised. Do we really need all these layers of complexity or are we prematurely optimizing? Only you as designer/developer can answer that for the problem you are trying to solve. The skill for critical thinking is not impossible to get. It just needs a bit of time, learning and experience.
