Jazz Lovers Tour of Harlem and Concert - Annual Charlie Parker Jazz festival

Harlem Walking Tour & Charlie Parker Jazz Festival (free!).

Geared for members who have not taken a tour of Harlem especially the Hamilton Heights or Heart of Harlem Tours.   Please consider your prior participation before you RSVP. Feel free to join us for the wonderful concert featuring world class musicians starting at 3:00pm in Marcus Garvey Park - 122nd Street near 5th Avenue.

This unique tour is geared for jazz lovers and those interested in the fascinating,, rich and complex history of Harlem.  Harlem's historic districts contain some of the City's most beautiful residential architecture and stunning churches. We will visit many places of historic and current importance.  We’ll start out in the Hamilton Heights, stroll through the magnificent City College Campus, Strivers Row and the Nicholas Historic District.   The tour will cover Harlem’s rich history, past, present and future and Harlem’s impact not just on NYC but the world. We'll talk about the evolution of jazz, styles of dance, and how be-bebop started in Harlem with a stop at the legendary Minton's Playhouse. We'll visit the sites of the famed original Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom and traverse the original "Swing Street".   You will come away with lots of great ideas of where to return for eating out and live music. At the end of the walk, we'll end up at 122nd Street near 5th Avenue at the new Richard Rodgers Ampthitheater in Marcus Garvey Park where you will have the option of staying for The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival which starts at 3:00pm and lasts until 7:00pm.  Attending the festival is free and optional. There will be food vendors and also plenty of area restaurants. This is an easy approximately 3 mile walk, almost entirely downhill and on level ground except for the early portion.

Here's link about the jazz festival which runs from Friday, the 22nd to Sunday, the 24th.   The Sunday portion of the festival is in Tompkins Square Park in the East Village.

What fun! And what a knowledgeable guide! Having only lived in NYC for a couple of years, I haven't yet had time to explore as much as of like. This walk was beautiful, well-paced, and perfectly enjoyable. Thanks, Hank! I'll be looking forward to upcoming walks!

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow! As there is a waiting list just a friendly reminder to change your RSVP status if you are not able to attend Saturday's meetup - -and please do not wait until the last minute! This makes it impossible for others still on the wait list to attend. Thanks!

Hank, just a note of caution to check that the 1 train is running to and from uptown this weekend, because it wasn't last week.

  • EZ R.

I'll just show up at the concert, to make room for newbies on this wonderful tour. Anyone want to meet me at the show?
