March Dessert Mingler: Murder Mystery & FUNdraiser for EasterSeals (3000 party!)

Please bring a pen with you to participate in Human Bingo.

We still have room for 9 more people (as of Noon), come out or bring a friend if you like!

As food will be pre ordered we expect all attendees to attend. If you are unsure do not RSVP and let the 100% sure come. Any late cancellation within 24 hours or no shows may be bumped from future events.

New to Extremely Shy? Here since the beginning or somewhere in the middle? This event is for you! Extremely Shy is getting closer to 3000 members! With so many faces so many events, this event is a great opportunity to get to meet other people at events you have never attended (eg. boardgames, dancing, hiking, movie group). Our mingler events are all about building community in the Extremely Shy community based upon "Connect 4" idea:

-Connecting with one another
-Connecting with community
-Connecting with causes
-Connecting with Truth

Come to this party, mingle around, meet people over dessert and watch the murder mystery unfold. We will have some icebreakers, team activities and entertainment. similar to our Lunar New Year party... but with a twist.

A "werewolf" is amongst the guest at the party and every hour he will "strike" and claim a victim. It is up to the attendees at the party to gather the clues given out between activities and find out who is the werewolf. A vote will take place at the end of the night, the team with the correct guess at who's the werewolf will win.

The cost of the event is $20 at the door which includes rental of venue, desserts, drinks, werewolf/mystery murder game and prizes.

A few things - first of all, thanks to Ed and the other organizers for making the effort. For the murder mystery, it would be helpful for the suspects to get the character sketches in advance so we could prepare. As it is, we were kind of put on the spot. I was expecting a scripted event. Lastly, I'm rather surprised at the negative comments. No-one was chained to their tables. It would have been very easy to stand up and move around and talk to others. Take some initiative, rather than expecting the organizers to spoon-feed you. Those that are more shy are probably more comfortable having a set group to talk to, while the more out-going ones could have easily wandered around to speak to others. It's not fair to blame Ed et al. for not doing so.

I forgot to mention that you give each person a number or color, this way when you move the people around you know who was previously in the group and can scramble them correctly preventing people from being "stuck".

I hadn't been following this discussion, but in response to Karen's comment, I wasn't complaining about the lack of opportunity to mingle, so whether or not I did move around is irrelevant. I respond only because I won't be accused of being a hypocrite. My comment was really directed towards one who was unbelievably rude and disrespectful towards the organizers. As it happens, she is no longer a member of this group. So be it.

Also, I noticed that, sometimes, when I try to upload a bunch of photos at a time, the meetup.com 'upload' utility doesn't work (or doesn't work well).
I know it's frustrating, but just to be sure, you can upload them after shrinking them to a size you've used before AND only upload 20 photos at a time.
It's annoying, but it seems to work.

My first meet up and I must say, I was disappointed, charging $20 for this event who ever thought sushi was a dessert, for $20.00 I could have had amazing dessert anywhere but The dessert mingler, your picture depicted an amazing dessert, what we got was a couple of costco baking, this event was so classless... What did you do with all money, $20x91people in attandance. And did I go to a mingler to heard all about board games...no... I thought we were there to be social.....I could care less whether I had dessert, what was so disappointing was the lack of thought in making an environment that was friendly and open so we could be social....

As organizers, we do move around and talk to people but we can only do so much. We can't make people have a good time.

      March 26, 2013

    • Kevin

@Jody, I agree with most of what you wrote. We do encourage people to get out of their comfort zone. I do it myself. It's really not unrealistic. If people want to get out of their comfort zone, they will. If they don't, they won't.

      March 26, 2013

  • Jenny C.

With various constraints & limited resources, I think Ed has done an excellent job in hosting this dessert party. From designing the party poster to raising the funds for Easter Seals, Ed, as a perfectionist, does his very best to accommodate people's requests. As a Shy group member, I highly appreciate Ed & other organizers' work & efforts. They are willing to volunteer & to learn how to organize events in the hope of bringing people from all walks of life together. They make the world more beautiful & peaceful.

Hey guys..in a bigger event like this where more people are involved, the difference in opinion is more likely to occur and it's pretty natural too. Anyways Ed, hats off to you and organizer team for taking the efforts to put together an event like this. I think organizers can Post some pre event ideas in meetup site where participants could brainstorm and give suggestions as to how to make the event interesting with various fun activities. Cheers!!

The case was supposed to be Ms Scarlet the KGB stole chemical poison from Professor Plum's lab. a similar story as the KGB spy who poisoned a high profile person with plutonium in 2006. If we had more time the story could've went deeper in detail.

      1 · March 25, 2013

@Ben and those who hated the tables and lights- I'm not a big fan of those tables and lights too! I would love less tables too but they can only provide these large fat tables (they don't have those small tall round tables for networking parties). Given the limited number of venues we know of we have to make do with these big fat dinner tables (or if we find a different venue). The lights had only 2 settings. on and off. no dimmed down.

There's also the process of developing a system that can facilitate people meeting one another. we're not experts, just volunteers who are passionate about building community and positive impact. That's why we rotate and try new things all the time (There's not really a lot of holidays in the first half of the year too lol). But each event we do, each feedback we get brings us closer to making the right fit for everyone.

we're always looking for more idea guys and people to help plan out future events

inexpensive catering services? do they exist? i would like to know. i tried looking around in the past. they all charge $20+ a person.

      March 25, 2013

    • Bonny

I should say, this is for the general downtown area on a weekend. It's tricky.if we do manage to get a free space (I've found two) they require a deposit out of pocket, have limited seating (40, 60, respectively) and all in attendance MUST buy food. If someone doesn't, it comes off the organizer's credit card. And so on...

      March 25, 2013

  • Ian

Hey guys. I'm sorry that not everybody walked away from this event feeling like they got their moneys worth. I'm not going to lie, there have been a few mingler events i've attended with this group where i've walked away thinking to myself "Why the hell did i go to that!?" But there have also been others where i've had such a good time that I felt depressed after it was over :P It's just not possible to please everybody. But we should all still recognize the ridiculous amount of work that Ed puts in to these things while asking for nothing in return. Finding an affordable venue on Saturday night is not easy. And yah the YWCA room is probably not ideal, but it's the only affordable one we've stumbled across so far. If anybody else should have other better suggestions then please let us know! My only advice for Ed going forward would be to spend a lot less money on prizes and more money on food/drinks. And i'm curious to see if people agree with me.

It does suck when people don't show up! I always showed up for each event I signed up to.

      March 25, 2013

    • Ed

Thanks for the suggestions Jody. From previous experiences prepayment tend to scare people away unless it's a very unique event (eg. Archery). And not everyone feels comfortable with online transactions. Especially for someone new to the group, they may feel its weird to give wire Ian a stranger to them at this time money over paypal. We tired going to restaurants but it just didnt work. restaurants would demand a minimum payment per person, sound and lighting cannot be controolled, no sound system and people dont pay tip, people dont show up etc... its very annoying. What has worked in our group is these minglers and we will continue to try different forms.

This little fuzzy turtle has a few tricks up his sleeves- er, shell.

As Marc so inefectively put (he thinks he's a good writer, but his 'mastery' of the English language is, in actuality, a BLASPHEMY of the English language! - ha!!); the mystery of the murderer may not have been solved this night, my warm-blooded friends!
The tables suspecting me may have been right after all(!!!)

On the note of a facilitated system for "speed friending", we are still developing a system to effectively mix people around without causing a hazard imagine 68 people running around the room! (if you do a clockwise moving system, you get the meet the people who do not move, but how would people going clockwise meet each other? How do you keep it simple?) we're not process engineers nor air traffic controllers but we are optimistic. We welcome any suggestions on coming up with an effective system. As for meeting people at other tables, a significant amount of time was given at the beginning because of the previous point. lots of people met many great people during that hour of mingling and the free time afterwards.

Thank you for these fast responses! (That means we can quickly know what we can make future events better!). As volunteers who DO NOT do professional event planning but are passionate to see people become more connected and noble causes supported, we welcome these suggestions very much to make future events enjoyable and effective!
We have tried different systems in the past to encourage mingling (Ranging from structured activities to freestyle evenings) and have received opposite experiences form different people at the same event. As of this date, we have not found a “one size fits all” system yet
We’re always open to new ideas and would love to encourage you all to help out at future events. We tried a conversation mingling evening where everyone was given a list of topics to talk about with people around them, it helped some (especially those who are extremely shy) by removing barriers and providing opportunities to start conversations, to others they found them not as helpful.

Thank you all for coming! Despite significant noshows and late cancellations we were able to raise $284 for Easter Seals! Who says Shy People cannot do anything? Because of your participation in today's event, we were able to make the world a better place by
-Participating collectively in earth hour (saving a potential 68 evenings of power + cellphone recharge)
-and supporting disabled children through Easter Seals.

Extremely Shy seeks to bring people together and build vibrant communities and lasting friendship. Your organizers are constantly looking to learn how to put up better events in the future. Because we're JUST volunteers (with a passion to do GOOD in the community) and not professional event planners, life/dating coaches, we're always trying something new to make future events enjoyable and purposeful. We would love to hear from you on our feedback form --> http://ow.ly/jmqXH
