  • Arnold Arboretum Autumn Picnic Walk Socializer
Exercise. Socializing. Free. Beautiful colors. History. Picnic. Veteran hosts. Introduction from the Hunnewell Center staff. Bonsai Pavilion. Co posted with Social Fun. 30 signups so far between two groups. This isn't a tour it's a socializer ... bad weather date= Oct 28. I will attempt to get us an impromptu short introduction at the front office if I can organize that again. I think I can. But it's worthwhile getting there early anyway because the front room at the Hunnewell Center has a great exhibition with a lite-up 3-D map worth seeing before we begin walking. Here's a portable map, https://arboretum.harvard.edu/wp-content/uploads/basic-map-b+w.pdf Founded by Harvard University, Arnold Arboretum was originally a medicinal facility gathering plants brought by ship from all over the world. It was the birthplace of the pharmaceutical industry which struggled to synthesize medications like aspirin (from Willow bark) which, once synthetically available, replaced those herbs and the entire thing became an industry from that point. Bring and eat your picnic if you bring one, and to socialize where we can sit comfortably. Likely that will be at a hilltop location. Look out for the Cork Bark trees to bounce off of. Every plant is labeled. This is the oldest public arboretum in North America, it has the oldest Bonsai collection in North America which we'll visit, (these plants are the oldest in the Arboretum at 300 years old and likely we'll get a short talk about them, too) ... We will walk at a leisurely but steady speed and will not wait for stragglers, sorry. Parking and T access: http://arboretum.harvard.edu/visit/directions/ Parking: Parking is available outside the main entrance, along the Arborway, and around the Arboretum’s perimeter. By MBTA: Orange Line to Forest Hills, exit to Washington St., turn right, 2nd left on to Arborway, ten minutes from there to the entrance.
