*FAUN ( Shame On You, Canada!seal-hunt demo @ The Canadian Consulate in NYC*

Friday, May 3rd, 2013 from 2 ~ 5pm @ the Canadian Consulate
1251 Avenue of Americas (6th Ave), at the corner of 50th St
New York, NY
**Canadian Seal Hunt, General Background**
**WARNING (graphic imagery):
• Canada's commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth. In just 10 years, over two million seals have been killed for their fur. This does not include the tens of thousands of seals who have been wounded by sealer’s clubs or rifles and escaped under the ice, only to succumb to their wounds and die.

• A seal-processing plant in Newfoundland and Labrador will get a $3.6-million loan from the provincial government this year (2013) for the seal hunt.
• In 2012, Canada conducted a 100% subsidized seal slaughter. Paid for by Newfoundland taxpayers, the official number of harp seal pups less than 2 months of age who were killed in Canada in 2012 is 69,175 though the quota was set to 400,000. This includes 1,569 seal pups less than 3 weeks of age. These numbers do not include seals who were 'struck and lost', but who got away, only to bleed to death in the ocean.
• 99% of the seals killed in the past 10 years have been less than three months of age. At the time of slaughter, many had yet to eat their first solid meal or take their first swim, leaving them utterly defenseless against the “hunters".
• In 2001, an independent veterinary panel studied the commercial seal hunt. They concluded that the seal hunt results in considerable and unacceptable suffering. They noted that in 42% of the seals examined there was not enough evidence of cranial injury to even guarantee unconsciousness at the time of skinning.
• Harp seals are ice dependent animals. They rely on sea ice to give birth to and nurse their pups and they need the ice to remain intact until the pups are strong enough to survive in open water.
• Climate change has caused sea ice to diminish at an alarming rate off Canada’s east coast in the harp seal birthing grounds. Sea ice formation has been well below average for each of the past 15 years, with 2011 having the lowest sea ice formation on record. The Canadian government has estimated up to 100% mortality in harp seal birthing areas when the sea ice did not form or melted too early in the season. Despite this, the Canadian government continues to authorize private profiteers to carry out gruesome, unconscionably cruel harp seal massacres each and every year.

PLEASE stand with FAUN ( in solidarity and in defense of the baby harp seals so horribly bludgeoned and/or shot to death, even SKINNED alive by coldhearted profiteers for ridiculous fur apparel. We will have plenty of signs, leaflets, a widescreen video and a few other surprises, designed to draw public/political attention to the nightmarish plight of the harp seals, the oceans of innocent blood, year after year turning cold and staining the ice CRIMSON with Canada's shame.
WHAT: *FAUN "Shame on You, Canada!" seal hunt demo*
WHERE: Canadian Consulate, 1251 Avenue of Americas # C1-15 (6th Ave) at corner of 50th St, New York, NY
WHEN: Friday, May 3rd, 2013
TIME: 2:00 ~ 5:00pm
This needless sickness has to stop. Please come and help us visibly and vocally demonstrate our adamant opposition to it. These animals are being pushed to the brink of extinction due to climate change, habitat loss and disruption of food chains, how disgraceful that on top of all we humans have imposed on them, we dedicate a season every year to bludgeoning or shooting their helpless, immobilized, vulnerable babies to a pulp, or skinning them alive. Please help us let the responsible government know that we’ll vocally oppose them in thought, word and deed, and encourage others to do so, until this horrible travesty is ABOLISHED FOREVER!
