Thursday, January 20, 2011, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm (rain or shine)

Looking for a free, after-work pick-me-up to spice up a chilly evening? In this month's installment of the Central Park Conservancy's Harlem Meer Social Hour, learn about a traditional English wintertime ritual that celebrates the cycle of the seasons. Enjoy a sword dancing performance, including live music, a lecture-demonstraction, and Q&A with the dancers.

This Social Hour performance will be produced by New York's own Half Moon Sword in advance of their annual New York Sword Dance Festival. Held for more than 25 years on President's Day weekend, the city-wide Festival welcomes troupes from around the country who bring an ancient winter celebration to life with fast-paced rapper sword and mysterious long sword dancing designed to wake the trees, flowers, and earth from their winter sleep. The dancers are linked in a ring by the "swords" as they weave ever-more complex figures in this modern display of skill -- a New York tradition adapted from English and European customs.

This Social Hour is co-presented by the Museum of the City of New York and Central Park Conservancy. Refreshments and plenty of time for mingling are provided. FREE. No advance registration. For adults. For more information about this Social Hour, call[masked] or visit the Harlem Meer Social Hour webpage. For more information about the New York Sword Dance Festival, please visit
