Magic Marks the Spot

Ahoy Mateys!

If you like pirates, magic, quirky humor, adventure on the high seas, and gargoyles, then boy oh boy do I have a book suggestion for you! Or better yet, if you have/know kids with such inclinations, then I've got a great gift idea! I hope you'll pardon this bit of shameless self-promotion (by proxy), but my wife's first book is coming out this Tuesday, September 10th, and I truly believe (only in part due to the long and storied association between frisbee and piracy) that many of you would enjoy it. Harper Collins is marketing it to kids around ages 8-14, but I assure you that it's great for kids-at-heart of all ages, and now's your chance to be the first to hear about it.  ;-)  I describe it as a novel (344 pages) telling a story of treasure hunting adventure and defying expectations while pursuing one's dreams, with the humorous sensibility of the early Harry Potter books, so please read on if that sounds appealing.

It's called "Magic Marks the Spot", by Caroline Carlson, and it's the first book in the "Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates" trilogy. It will be available from standard online vendors (links to some here), but you can get signed copies if you order from the local indie bookstore the Penguin Bookshop; just leave info on how you would like it dedicated in the "Order comments" when you check out, or give them a call. Or locals can just ask me regardless of where you get copies from, and I'll hook you up with a signature. There are also e-book and audio book versions available, the latter of which sounds like lots of fun from the clip on Amazon/Audible.

The cover, a teaser, and some of the critical recognition it's gotten so far are below to hopefully further tempt you. I'll bring by a copy to tomorrow's game in case anyone would like to flip through it. There are lots of funny documents between chapters that the art team did a really nice job with. There's also a preview of the first couple chapters on the publisher website.

Cheers, and thanks for reading through this interruption in your regular disc-related news,

=== About the Book ===

 “There’s merriment and intrigue on the high seas in this debut novel… Carlson’s characters are as memorable as they are entertaining.”—Publisher’s Weekly, starred review

Hilary Westfield has always dreamed of being a pirate. She can tread water for thirty-seven minutes. She can tie a knot faster than a fleet of sailors, and she already owns a rather pointy sword. There’s only one problem: The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates refuses to let any girl join their ranks of scourges and scallywags.

But Hilary is not the kind of girl to take no for answer. To escape a life of petticoats and politeness at her stuffy finishing school, Hilary sets out in search of her own seaworthy adventure, where she gets swept up in a madcap quest involving a map without an X, a magical treasure that likely doesn’t exist, a talking gargoyle, a crew of misfit scallywags, and the most treacherous—and unexpected—villain on the High Seas.

MAGIC MARKS THE SPOT is the first installment in the Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates trilogy. Books 2 and 3 are forthcoming in 2014 and 2015.
