Mobile at Facebook with Jocelyn Goldfein

Facebook is the world's most widely used mobile application. Its breadth of functionality and speed of iteration regularly pushes the limits of what is possible on mobile platforms. Come learn about the challenges and opportunities facing mobile developers, and lessons Facebook has learned along the way.

Jocelyn Goldfein is a Director of Engineering at Facebook, where she is relentlessly focused on building a great engineering organization. At Facebook, Jocelyn has lead engineering efforts for a variety of Facebook products, including news feed, search, photos and video. Prior to joining Facebook, Jocelyn was  Vice President of R&D at VMware, where she ran the engineering and product teams for VMware’s desktop products.  She previously was Director of Engineering at e-mail management start-up MessageOne, and began her career as a software engineer at Trilogy. Jocelyn holds a bachelors degree in computer science from Stanford University.

Few important notes for this Meetup:

1. Unfortunately, space for this will be limited so that we won't be able to fit everyone in.  Due to that, we will be giving priority to engineers.  Chances are, if you are a recruiter, investor, lawyer, you will be bumped.  Please don't take it personally, but as this is a tech talk, want to make sure techies get first dibs.

2. Building security here is bit of a pain.  Please make sure you have your full name attached to your RSVP.  If we do not have your full name, you will be unlikely to get past building security.  This is out of our control.

3. If you are not confirmed in the final RSVP list, you can't just show up.  If your name is not on the list, building security won't let you in.

I would have enjoyed more of a technical deep-dive. Thanks for hosting!

Appreciate Facebook putting in the effort to host as well, and agree more technical would be great in future, particularly given that the audience were all developers.

Much agreed, was glad we could go a bit more technical during the Q&A

It was very informative, learned about the great technology and Jocelyn was an excellent speaker.

Thank you!! thank you, FB NYC and Jocelyn Goldfein. Fantastic presentation: a very interesting insight in the mobile development process, and the intersection of user experience. It will be interesting to see if FB becomes more content driven or service driven as it expands to the wider, global audience. And to the comment below: we are all tech people: if you use it, you can (and do) design it, knowingly or otherwise as the talk showed tonight.

Unfortunately, I got there a bit late, and the event was closed. So it goes.

    February 5, 2014

  • Greg W.

Want to reiterate again. If you were not RSVP'd yes as of last night, you will unfortunately not be able to attend. Building security asks us for a list of attendees and they will not allow people into the building if your name was not on the list. I would hate for people to show up and then be turned away by the building security.

    • Michael Mordechai C.

Greg, I was confirmed for the event and just noticed preparing to leave for event that I was bumped .... Please advise if still able to attend? Ty

    • Marco P.

Hi, my name I'd on the list but security isn't letting anyone in. Could you please send messages to allow me in. Even with the inclement weather I managed to get here albeit a bit late.

      February 5, 2014

  • Marco P.

Hey anyone :-) for some reason we aren't bring let up even though we rsvp d. Something about the Facebook event being closed? Can someone please do something and tell the security to allow us up. We still got here even with the weather issues and the security is very rude

  • Alexander L.

Just switched my RSVP to NO by accident. Any way to get me back on the list? I would really like to attend this meetup.

    February 5, 2014

    • Jimmy C.

I can speak with a 90% confidence level that you can get in as the list was locked in yesterday so security should still have you down even though you cancelled today

      1 · February 5, 2014

    • Alexander L.

Thanks Greg for putting me back on the list.

      February 5, 2014

  • Bocheng Z.

Does the waitlist stop updating? Many people have given up their spots.

    February 5, 2014

    • Jimmy C.

If you didn't get in by yesterday, it's too late. It doesn't matter what meetup says today.

      February 5, 2014

  • David Creixell M.

Hey, How probable is that the people who are in the waiting list can go? Thanks Greg!

    February 5, 2014

    • Greg W.

I sent an email about this yesterday. The list finalized last night, so if you are on the waiting list, you will not be able to attend unfortunately.

      February 5, 2014

  • Andreas

I had to give-up my RSVP for another obligation. I'll have to make it next time.

Is there any waiting list of sorts?

    February 4, 2014

    • Greg W.

At this point no. The list is closed.

      February 4, 2014

  • Alex R.

Folks, If you are unable to make it, please change your status ASAP so that people on the waiting list can get a spot.

Is anyone here planning a twitter commentary on this event?

    January 31, 2014

  • Joe

Will people on the wait-list also be on a backup RSVP list for building security. It has been long experience that a significant number who RSVP will not show.

Will the wait-list group be checked and processed in the lobby at 7pm?

    2 · January 30, 2014

    • Greg W.

No, the only people on the list will be the Yes RSVPs. We will manage the list effectively to fit maximum people in, but if you don't get onto the Yes list, you won't be able to get in.

      January 30, 2014

  • Jimmy C.

Just make sure people check off their names when they arrive at the meetup. That way, you can keep track of who signs up and don't show. Do that a few times and you're banned for life!

    1 · January 29, 2014

  • Lydia M.

    Hey Greg,

Thanks for the update and being serious about no-shows - always bums me out when I'm on a waitlist.

Anyway, I make a living as a web strategist and communications designer and facilitator at Decoded's Code in a Day. A large portion of my life is spent dealing with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. If you would prefer I open my spot for a full-time programmer or think this will be on topics outside the scope of my day to day practice, I will do so. Please advise.

    Will the talk be recorded?

    January 29, 2014

Just got the email that 30 more spots have opened up, but I can't register for some reason. Still only shows option to go on/off waitlist...

    January 27, 2014

    • Thomas Vander S.

Any way to see where on the waiting list we are to see if we have only a microscopic or a larger chance of getting in? Also, where do you check if we're really an engineer ? :)

      1 · January 27, 2014

    • Varun M.

I'd wager they determine engineer-ness based on what you say in your intro, and the answers you gave when joining the group.

If I can do anything to get a spot to this let me know. Need the floors scrubbed for a month or more? I'm your man! :) lol

Im on the wait list- is it best to show up and hope someone doesn't?

    January 25, 2014

    • Greg W.

No, building security will have a final list and will only allow people in on that list. We will be opening more spots soon.
