As the New Year is upon us, its time to think about your resolutions for 2013. Couple that need with an upcoming spring season of excellent area races (Cherry Blossom 10 miler, Rock & Roll DC Half, GW Parkway Classic, Crystal City 5K Fridays all come to mind) and its time to make a plan.
Plan to run. Run to reduce stress, burn calories, make friends. Run to remind yourself how lucky you are able to put one foot in front of the other. Just Do It.
Most of the (excellent) running programs in this area have organized 8AM morning runs for Saturday or Sunday mornings. YIKES. That's Early. And its Colder at that time too. Nothing like cold+early morning = excuses = not running = not having fun = sad FSCer

As an alternative....
Beginning in January, we'll gather in front of Caribou Coffee on Saturdays for an informal five mile run. I will run at a 10 minute pace for the first couple of months, and may kick it up a notch to 9.3 minute miles. If you run faster than that = AWESOME. If you run a bit slower = AWESOME. Just show up with a smile and know we are all out there on the path together enjoying a nice run.
PLEASE NOTE: These are informal runs, I am not a running coach. And I won't make every Saturday. Doesn't mean you can't still gather and run. Bring water and dress for the weather. If its colder than 35 degrees, if its raining hard or there is ice on the ground, we will cancel the run.
BEGINNERS: If you are an absolute beginner, I would suggest beginning running with the Shirlington Running Club on Tuesdays at 6PM - which is a shorter 5K run (3.1 miles), with a larger swath of runners of all abilities.

We’ll meet in front of Caribou Coffee at 3PM sharp. We’ll do quick round of introductions, go over the route, and then start the run out together, but expect everyone will be finding their own comfortable pace and hopefully a pace-buddy. The 2.5 Mile marker will be at the GW parkway at the airport. There, we’ll turn around, making sure we give a wave and shout of encouragement all those from our group you pass on the trail. I expect to do it at a slow, easy pace.
The run ends at Caribou coffee - for those who have time, feel free to linger and stretch, etc. For those who have to scoot, feel free to go. I will not be taking roll, and there is no requirement to check in with me after the run.
Finally, please dress for the weather - wear hat, gloves, layers, dry wicking and bring water if you think you’ll need it.
Please familiarize yourself with the route so that you are comfortable on the trail.
