Orienteering Hike @ Prince William Forest

Please join members of the Fairlington Social Club on Sunday February 24, 2012 at 11:00 AM for a orienteering hike at Prince William Forest located at 18100 Park Headquarters Road Triangle, Virginia 22172.

Lunch @ Zum Rheingarten German restaurant after the hike at 2:00 PM.

As this is an activity done in conjunction with the Quantico Orienteering Club, there will be a $10.00 cash fee charged for this event to cover equipment rental, payable at the start of the hike.

You'll learn lots of the basics including how to use a compass and how to read topographical and orienteering maps for navigating on and off trail.

Orienteering is fun !

Orienteering is an outdoor sport suitable for all ages and fitness levels; basically, it's like a scavenger hunt in which you use a detailed map to find checkpoints that have been placed at locations marked on a topographic map.

Bring a snack for during the break. Wear clothing & shoes appropriate for being outside for the day's weather.

For those wishing to carpool from Arlington, we will meet at 10:15 AM at the Fairlington Villages Management Office located at 3001 S. Abingdon Street Arlington, Virginia 22206.

Please be on time or be prepared to drive yourself.

Depending upon the number of people, we might need volunteers to drive. Otherwise, we will see you at the trail head at 11:00 AM.

The course is about 3 miles. I expect it will take us about 2-2.5 hours depending on how well 'hidden' the check points are (it will take a few minutes to find each one). Instructions will be available for beginners.

This is the perfect opportunity to get an introduction to using a map and compass for navigation.

If you have a national park pass, please remember to bring it. This is a national park so a $5/car fee is collected upon entrance to the park.

At 2:00 PM after the hike, will head over to the Zum Rheingarten German restaurant located at 3998 Jefferson Davis Highway, Stafford, Virginia 22554 for lunch and cold refreshing adult beverages.

The restaurant will open early for the FSC Volksmarchers.

After lunch we can visit the free admission National Museum of the Marine Corps located at 18900 Jefferson Davis Highway Triangle, VA 22172.

Orienteering requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain, and normally moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control or check points. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has become a sport for outdoor enthusiasts.
