Best moment didn't even involve my games, and it was even more awesome than our guest speaker: there were three 10-year-olds playing Russian Railroads. I hope Darren got a picture. :-)

Two of those gnomes were mine. Yes I took a picture. Already uploaded it here too. :)

Glad to join in on a learning game of Euphoria - now I can get it off my shelf! Thanks to those who came along for a partial run through on Viticulture & to Michael, Mackenzie & Megan for teaching my daughter three new games.

    1 · August 24, 2014

    • Lyna

I had a good time playing game with you. Tks for bringing up the Viticulture. Next time I will do better :)

      August 24, 2014

  • Glenda C.

Great I learned 3.5 new games!

    • Darren B.

:P - I'll time our last game better next time, I promise!

      August 24, 2014

  • Gord W.

Had a lot of fun. Played Dragon Slayers, Takenoko, Ingenious, Carcassonne, and El Grande. Actually finished second at the latter - was always last the other two or three times I've played it. Did take one star off the rating for the venue for the group having to start the day with a chair hunt.

    August 24, 2014

    • Darren B.

Yeah - I won't here the end of it about the chairs - sorry about the inconvenience!

A full house with no seats to be had anywhere and a sick wife at home meant that I just stayed for a couple of quick games. Thanks to Paul for teaching Mascarade! Sorry to have missed Tom Felber.

I had such an awesome first meetup! Thanks everyone, I'm glad to have found such an open and inviting community of gamers. Special thanks to Tom and Gord for teaching me 3 new games!

North wind twice very awesome ships, hanabi with three girls (am I nuts), freedom is hard but fun, and skull king with our special guest Tom was amazing.

    1 · August 23, 2014

  • Darren B.

I had a great day playing games! Played North Wind , Machi Koro, Helios and a really short game of Impluse at the end of the evening.

Thanks to everyone who came out and I apologize to those who I didn't get to game with - Dead of Winter and Run, Fight, or Die looked really interesting!

    2 · August 23, 2014

  • Darren B.

A huge thanks to Paul Saxberg for organizing the presentation by Tom Felber! It was extremely interesting, and I know that everyone gained a lot of insight into how the SDJ operates.

    HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!

Tom Felber is the chairman of the jury for the prestigious German Spiel Des Jahres award. He has been touring North America to promote awareness and understanding of the award.

He will be joining us at the regular Brentwood Meetup on Saturday August 23th. At 5 pm, he will be giving a short talk about the Spiel Des Jahres, and will be available to answer questions afterwards.

(This is open to the public and there is no charge. Players in the middle of ongoing games will be requested to either take a ½ hour supper break, or to continue quietly on the other side of the room during the event.)

Amy - there will probably be a couple copies floating around.

Oh, one other big thing: in Euphoria, all players' possessions (except face-down recruits, which aren't "possessions", heh) are public knowledge.

      August 23, 2014

    • Matthew Y.

What is Euphoria? Do I have the required level of IQ and maturity to play?

      August 23, 2014

  • Francis

Darren, I read somewhere that they balanced the Agents in Euphoria because some were way better than others. Do you know anything about it, or have them?

    August 22, 2014

    • Brendan

16 recruits in total were revised to greater or lesser degrees. You can get more info, including a PDF of the revisions, from this page on the publisher's website: http://stonemaiergame...

      August 23, 2014

    • Brendan

If you'd like to ensure that your first game includes these revisions, you're welcome to print out the PDF and bring it along. Barring that, if I'm teaching the game, we'll use the new recruits to the degree that I've learned them and the rest, by necessity, would be the defaults.

Second, any recommendations for a good way to list his collection so that others on Meetup can request games to the game day? One option I am contemplating is to modify his BGG collection to only reflect what he has in Calgary, removing what he left in Texas. Another would be to list the games in his profile on Meetup, but I do not know if there is a word/character limit on here. Any thoughts are appreciated.

    1 · August 21, 2014

    • Brendan

Amy, to attempt to answer your specific question about listing Jeremy's collection, your idea to modify his listing via BGG would work but, depending on his collection's size, may be labourious. It may be less effort to create a separate account and list his collection present in Calgary, but that would skew ownership stats and possibly create additional complications if he were to make personal connections via BGG with folks locally—he is, after all, one person, not two. :-p Unfortunately, "location" is not one of the data fields BGG provides for one's collection.

      August 22, 2014

    • Brendan

As for using his Meetup account, one's introduction is limited to 250 characters, but the profile questions seem to have no limit. Again, if his collection here isn't too massive, you may find it easier to type out the games there. Just be aware that it will be a wall of text and not formatted as any sort of list.

Alien frontiers you promised to teach me Darren. Still want to show Glenda glory to time. Race for the galaxy if time permits might be cool too

    1 · August 19, 2014

    • Michael R.

I am bringing Alien Frontiers. You should try Eminent Domain. It is like Race for the Galaxy but better.

      August 19, 2014

    • Amy

We would be happy to bring Glory to Rome (Black Box edition) if needed.

      1 · August 22, 2014

  • Amy

Thanks for all the advice and info. One other question...is a printed ticket required for each of us? I haven't ever seen or used that before for any Meetups we organized or attended back in Texas. I will print them if they are needed to get in, but otherwise I would rather save the paper and ink.

    August 21, 2014

    • Darren B.

Yep - 4-4:30 I will do a Door Prize draw, then this month we have a special speaker (see above)

      August 22, 2014

    • Amy

      Thank you again!

Hi all! It is wonderful to see the activity here before a game day! I have a couple of questions. My boyfriend and I will be attending for the first time. He is new to Calgary, and will be living here for 2-3 years while attending law school (I am just visiting off and on.) First, in general, are there people who attend that enjoy playing co-operative games? What about abstract games? (Think GIPF Series, Taluva, Arimaa, Coerceo...).

    1 · August 21, 2014

    • Darren B.

Hi Amy - and welcome to the Group!

      August 21, 2014

    • Darren B.

      Silly [Enter] Key!

Anyway, as I was going to say - you will find all stripes of gamers attend our little meetup, there are definitely fans of both co-op and abstract games in attendance, but I think you will find that the multi-player games get more attention than the 2-player games (but I know that they have been played as well.

(I'll continue this post on your post, just to keep it confusing :))

      August 21, 2014

  • Darren B.

BTW - Much thanks to Paul Saxburg for organizing this!

    August 13, 2014

  • Brendan

This is a poke for people who have currently RSVP-ed for both this event and the Griffiths' event on the same day. Unless you really plan to attend both (in which case I salute you :-), please update your RSVP so as to free up a spot in whichever event you won't be attending.

Greg - can you bring Star Realms?

    August 19, 2014

    • Greg

      Sure thing!

      August 19, 2014

  • Darren B.

Brad - can you bring Sail to India?

    August 19, 2014

    • Brad

      Yes, and Lost Valley.

      1 · August 19, 2014

    • Darren B.

Cool - I'll leave my copy at home.

      August 19, 2014

  • Brendan

I'm totally requesting El Grande and Tikal—winners of 1996's and 1999's Spiel des Jahres, respectively—for this meetup! For those interested, a list of SdJ-winning games can be found here: boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Spiel_des_Jahres
