Lace up your dancing shoes and get ready to swing with the Junius Courtney Big Band and Denise Perrier at the Freight! The 19-piece band, founded in 1963 when the late trumpeter Junius Courtney moved to the Bay Area from his native New Orleans, is celebrating its 50th anniversary season and the release of a new album. Led by Junius’s son Nat Courtney behind the drum kit, directed by George “Jazzbeaux” Spencer on trumpet, and featuring special guest Denise Perrier on vocals, the band brings its impressive jazz chops to swing and blues classics as well as exciting originals. Grab a partner and Mambo, Rhumba, Bolero and Cha-Cha-Cha your way to a great Saturday night.

Lush, romantic, powerful… all the adjectives you could use to describe the 21 piece Big Band Jazz group last night. Denise Perrier a wonderful singer. It was fun to dance in couples and group. Jazz and dance are a well-mannered pairing that takes some practice. The two socials in the lobby and later the pizzeria were a good chance to hear from the members - vets and newbies. Freight & Salvage staff were very good too in managing the evening.

For the men who are a little shy about dancing, just look at YouTube beginning cha-cha-cha dance lessons and you'll realize how easy 3 steps are, then in a crowded dance floor just swing the arms around ;)

Singles encouraged to attend. My dance steps are pretty basic so I'll be improvising along the way. It's okay to dance as a group when the music moves you.
