We'll be walking in skidrow to help homeless
L.A. XMAS BY NIGHT Hike to Help the Homeless @ Downtown L.A.
From[masked], legendary Sierra Club leaders Stag Brown, Bobcat Thompson and Joe Young have led an overnight hike through the Skid Row of Downtown Los Angeles, donating clean clothing, personal hygiene items, food, and whatever their backpacks can carry.
I'm reviving this "Urban Hike" tradition, so join us, put on your backpacks and hiking boots to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Dress warmly and wear good walking shoes. Everyone is welcome to participate in this hike, mature teenagers included.
We'll have a NEW, SHORTER ROUTE and an EARLIER MEETING TIME this year! The route is between 2-4 miles round trip, as we seek out citizens in need. Please arrive around 10:30 pm. WE START HIKING AT 11 PM. The event culminates around 2 AM with the traditional breakfast at the Original Pantry.
THIS YEAR, I'M LOOKING FOR 3 VOLUNTEERS TO BE ASSISTANT LEADERS AND 2 VOLUNTEERS TO BE "FOLLOW DRIVERS". Assistant leaders should be familiar with Sierra Club Hiking style OR be familiar with Downtown L.A. NEW THIS YEAR: If attendance exceeds 50 people, we will break off into 2 groups. Follow Drivers should have a reliable car that is easy to load/unload to carry excess donation items. Email me at [masked]
BRING: $5 for parking lot, street parking might be available. $ for the (optional) breakfast at the Original Pantry. More importantly bring something to donate.
ACCEPTABLE ITEMS FOR DONATION:
CLEAN CLOTHES: t-shirts, sweaters, socks, warm hats, gloves, etc.
FOOD ITEMS: sandwiches, cookies, apples, cup o'noodles, juice boxes, think non-perishables. NO CANNED FOODS (they're too heavy)!
PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS: toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, roll on, hand sanitizer
Email me at [masked] if you have any questions about donation items, or anything else.
HELPFUL HINTS: Wear layers and dress for the weather. You don't need to wear your fanciest hiking gear, just dress to stay warm. Sturdy shoes recommended. Bring WATER to stay hydrated. Bring the biggest backpack you can safely handle. Bring goods to donate. Bring $ for parking and breakfast.
PARKING: Joe's Parking Lot at 212 E. 7th St. Metro lot.
Please join us with an open mind, an open heart, and a little streetwise self-confidence, as we seek to make this holiday season a little brighter for the people of Skid Row. Thanks so much for your time!
