What we're about

The Feldenkrais Method is a remarkable and fascinating approach to learning, movement and change. The lessons, taught in a group, are a form of movement meditation where you awaken mindfulness in action. You are guided through sequences of moving, sensing and resting, all the time deepening the capacity for embodied attention. Lessons are pleasant, gentle and can benefit anyone, as each person works at their own level of ability. Most people experience a difference after the first class, finding a sense of calm as well as more comfort, ease, lightness and increased range of movement.

Benefits include:

• Improved posture, co-ordination, core strength and balance

• Easier and fuller breathing, co-ordinated with action

• Deeper self-awareness in yoga, meditation and martial arts

• Relief from pain, excess tension and stiffness

• Increased vitality and calmer clearer thinking

• More efficient movement resulting in enhanced performance for sport, dance, music and drama

Here's what some people have said about their experiences of coming to a Feldenkrais class

"I felt very relaxed and very different after last night’s Feldenkrais lesson – looser and lighter. This has me fascinated now….”

" I feel amazing! All light and poised! Thank you"

"New technique to me but wow how effective! The pain in my shoulder blade has completely gone. I have had issues with it for about 8 months .. But after the lesson the movement in my shoulder is freer and looser... my arm and shoulder feel normal again! Thank you. Amazing healing technique!"

Moving Out of Pain

The Swansea Wellbeing Centre

£7.00

The Feldenkrais Method offers a safe, comfortable way to learn how to shift your pain by exploring your movement patterns. You will discover how to rewire your brain to move without pain. This six week course is designed for those with recurrent aches and pains, as well as anyone else who is looking for slow-paced, gentle, easy movement lessons. The natural and instinctive response to pain is to become increasingly tense, and to get stuck in limited movement patterns to attempt to protect the painful area. Over time this response leads to a loss of mobility, and a vicious cycle in which pain alters and restricts posture and movement, while these inefficient postural and movement patterns themselves create further pain and damage. In addition chronic pain blocks our ability to sense ourselves accurately, and to find healthier movement patterns which could bring more ease. The focus of our attention becomes reduced, creating inaccurate sensorimotor perceptions about our posture and movement. Many people with chronic pain find that doing strengthening or stretching exercises while still stuck in these habits of excess tension and inefficient posture simply doesn't help, and can easily lead to injuries. The Feldenkrais approach is a way of breaking this vicious cycle, by teaching you how to begin to widen your focus of attention, to more accurately sense yourself, and to bring calm to your nervous system. You will find out how to let go on unnecessary tension, to let pain dissolve, and to gradually discover more comfortable natural easy ways to move. You'll need to be able to comfortably lie on the floor to do these lessons. Each person stays within their own limits, and the small class size means you will have individual attention when needed. The 6 week series will run from January 15th- February 19th. The cost of the 6 week course is £36. If you can't make every week you can pay £7 per class for the weeks you are able to attend. However, the course is designed as a series so you will benefit more from coming every week. Please get in touch with me if you'd like more information. If you're planning to come along, then please contact me before the course starts so I can find out more about you and check whether it will be suitable for you. “The Feldenkrais classes with Philippa are just amazing - we seem to ‘do’ so little and yet, by the end of the class, my range of movement has always increased considerably; quite magical!” More information at http://www.philippacastell.com
