For our next meeting we will be joining the Secular Humanist Society for their annual Free Thought Brunch.

with speaker Fraidy Reiss
Founder and Executive Director of Unchained at Last

Forced marriage. Child marriage. These human rights abuses remain legal across much of the United States, and they continue to happen at an alarming rate. Child marriage is legal in the U.S., and an estimated 248,000 children as young as 12 were married here between 2000 and 2010. Almost all were girls wed to adult men. Fraidy Reiss, a forced marriage survivor-turned-advocate, will lead our discussion about why these abuses remain, where and how they occur and to whom, and what we can do to stop them.

Ms. Reiss founded Unchained At Last, the only organization dedicated to ending forced and child marriage in the U.S. through direct services and advocacy. She is recognized as an expert on forced and child marriage in the U.S.; her writing on the subject has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other newspapers.
