Any Kayakers in the Group? There is a better &FREE launch in Dunnellon. I've kayaked around 100's of Gators and NEVER saw an aggressive one! Hit several with my kayak large & small! kayaked all around Myakka River & Lake with many large Gators! I would still snorkel Rainbow.

Best to err on the side of safety being chased and or possibly eaten by alligator isn't my idea of fun. I'm gonna pray on it in church tomorrow but tonight this news is very disturbing and I don't feel it's worth taking a chance.

I wonder if the trappers got that one rogue gator,,, it seems the gators have had about enough of all the tourism invading their nesting grounds and home so perhaps we should cancel the outing ?

it's a great river , the park for wildlife is tourable nearby would make a great day outing or even find a place to rent for the weekend, pitch in money to rent a pontoon boat would be fun I think and toss the inner tubes off the boat and get wet and stay cool.

Tubing Entrance: (10830 SW 180th Av Rd) Open 7 days a week from Memorial Day - Labor Day and on weekends in April and September. The entrance is off of 180 Ave Road in Dunnellon and is open from 8:00am to 3:30pm. Park admission is $5.00 per vehicle (2-8 people), 1 person per vehicle is $4.00 and extra people (above the 8) are $2.00 each. Rental of tubes are through Nature Quest and cost $15/person including tram service. The length is 2 miles and is approximately 1.5 hours depending on the weather/wind. Personal tubes: 60” or less in any directions are allowed for an $15 tram fee. You can only launch by taking the tram service and return to the parking area: Tubing is not allowed in the headsprings area of the park. Coolers and alcohol are prohibited. We recommend avoiding the weekends if possible or arriving early on weekends and holidays. Gates will temporarily close when park reaches maximum capacity, they will reopen when parking spaces become available.

      May 27

    • Trudy A.

The carpool sounds good to me Debbie if you want to share gas expenses it will be a long day so let's split expense of hotel over night is what I'd rather do than drive home on same day since it's so exhausting all day out on river is very relaxing though and I'd like to make this (prefer kayak but I don't have my single trailer yet. )

      May 28

  • Jane M.

I definitely want to do this trip - will probably not stay overnight though, I can just drive to my Mom's house from there. If we're planning a campout and have some activities the next day, that might entice me to stay. I'm planning on bringing my sister too. Looking forward to meeting all my fellow adventurers!

    1 · May 28

  • Roxanne B.

This really sounds fun. If you take a single fitted sheet, it fits right over a tube, and voila, no bum through the hole. You can sit right on top of it. :) Your meme for the day. :)

    1 · May 24

  • Jim M.

Hello, Jim here, the group organizer. I'm well acquainted with the float trip on the Itch and canoe / kayak trips in the three rivers region. That would be the Suwannee, Santa Fe, and Itchetucknee. I have many friends that have relocated to that area and it is a great place to play. The difficulty I see is the logistics of arranging a timely arrival and accommodations before and after a trip. Three hour drive each way and you would certainly want to spend 4 to 6 hours on the river. That would be a long day. Also, we would have to decide wether we would take the entire trip from the spring boil at the north end or tube just the route that begins and ends at the southern unit of the park, near US 27. There are state parks and private campgrounds nearby and O'leno SP has cabins for rent. Getting to the launch area early is critical, if I recall, because there is a daily limit on the # of tubers allowed. There Rainbow is closer but as pointed out nearby, parking is a problem.

    May 23

    • Nanette Vavricka A.

There's some other places up near "the itch" -Ellie Rays for camping and they have cabins ; Smoakhouse Ranch which has a large farm house that we stayed in with 10 people and a couple smaller cabins and a authentic cracker cabin ; there's also campground across from the entrance to the state park and in High Springs there's a couple places. I agree that a tubing adventure on "the itch"would be more than a day trip. We have stayed up in that area often and I would be more than happy to lead a group the second day to one of the very old graveyards way setback near the river it's quite the history lesson of old Florida and some of the earlier settlers in the area

      5 · May 23

ohhh love the idea of seeing the old grave yards too, history buff here, esp CW war.

    May 16

The Rainbow River is open year round for tubing. The state park has parking and you can rent tubes. It's just the Itchetucknee River that is really shallow and often closed in the summer depending on rainfall.

    1 · May 9

    • Nanette Vavricka A.

Often the Itchetuknee is closed because it's too full - too much rain. And places along the Santa Fe which the itch feeds into and Bob's Riverplace on the Suwanee have spotty openings and closings because of the flooding. ( we spend a lot of time out that way either kayaking or fishing )

      May 10

This is something that has to be done in the fall or winter. The rivers are closed in the summer
