Jan Tomko is originally from Upper Michigan, but has made Milwaukee his home for the past 48 years. He considers himself fortunate to have studied and trained in the Native American Spiritual Ways with various elders from the Lakota, Cheyenne and woodland peoples. He is on the Native Committee at the Veteran’s Administration, is a Peace Pipe Carrier and makes ceremonial pipes. It is his honor to speak with all those interested in learning and understanding the Native American Culture, the purpose and meaning of various ceremonies, what it means to be a Pipe Carrier, the various pipes and their intended use.

HEALTH ALERT: Individuals with breathing difficulties or respiratory issues may not wish to attend this event as smudging will create smoke in the air. A Peace Pipe Ceremony is conducted at the end of this class, for those who are interested in participating, will also create smoke. There is no requirement to “puff” on the pipe if that is not your desire; however, it is a requirement that all participants involved in this ceremony refrain from any alcohol or other non-prescribed medication/drugs for a minimum of 24 hours prior to the event.
