Brin's Ridge circumnavigation/loop

This hike will start at the end-of-Jordan-Road trailhead. Here, we follow the Brin's Mesa Trail to where it tops off the lower end of the mesa---almost at the foot of Brin's Ridge. So far, easy-moderate. You can take a rest break here---or, take an option for a short but steep and strenuous trail ascent to the top of Brin's Ridge for one of the better views of the Sedona area. Back on the mesa, we will go a short distance along the Brin's Mesa Trail to a left trail to the top of a flat area for lunch---if we haven't done that on Brin's Ridge. From here---to an archway that descends to the base of the mesa---vertically challenging enough to be considered strenuous---but, only for a few dozen steps. Those who do not like heights can avoid the left turn and go on a few hundred yards, +/-, to the left bearing Soldiers Pass Trail and go down the easy way---adding almost half a mile to the loop. We then hike to Seven Pools and regroup with those folks who went the long way---staying just a few dozen steps to the left of the Soldiers Pass Trail---or, we could take the trail if people wish. From Seven Pools to the sinkhole in a few minutes and back to the cars in about half a mile. Total = 4.5 miles, +/- depending on the options one takes.

Meet adjacent to the lowest corner of the W. Walmart parking lot.

Answer to a question at the FHC meetup site:

Lorena---in order to keep everyone happy---some of us may go in at almost the end of May and stay into June. Perhaps, holding a campsite for those who can not go in until the weekend. I doubt that everyone will all go in at the same time considering the huge variety in the date when each person can go. I once had a Superstitions backpack for which everyone could go a different week----no one the same week.

Re. the wading---I have several systems---I am not happy with any of them for over the knees wading.

Before then, I will probably have a Pumphouse Wash hike with only about 15 yards of wading---but, I could bring ALL my systems---loan them to those who want to carry them---and, you could see which works best.

I have a really nice wetsuite---too heavy for hiking---but, I am tempted to cut the legs off---though, it would be wasteful.

Does anyone out there have an old grungy wetsuit they would be willing to sell

I am looking for one that is almost ready to throw out so I feel free to cut the legs off. Is yours like that, David?

Cut the legs off a wetsuit that you plan on wading with...? Sorry, I seemed to have misunderstood what you are needing. You probably could find what you need on eBay.

hi there! I would like to join you but am unfamiliar with Flagstaff, you are meeting at the west Walmart? That would be where? I'm travelling from the northeast (Chinle) ... via the bia road thru leupp. can someone please provide a general sense of where the walmart is and I will look up directions on mapquest. How far is the trailhead from walmart? thanks.

After you log in---click the location. This will result in a map. Basically---you come in on I-40 to the I-17 exit---go north to the first traffic light adjacent to Sizzler, turn left---keep in the rightmost left turn lane. In a block, you will see Walmart on the right---continue south to Woodlands---the next traffic light after passing the Walmart store---keep that on your right. After turning onto Woodlands, right, ignore the driveway to the credit union---take the driveway into the Walmart parking lot. If you miss that turn---look for the next---just as good. Head for the lowest corner. We'll have a big group. Other groups meet here too---so, be sure to ask if this is the hiking club.

We had 10 people + 4 dogs at the assembly point and were joined by an 11th at the trailhead. A person from Chinle did not show.

From the trailhead, we went up an easy-moderate grade to the foot of Brin's Ridge. Here, 4 people and one dog chose to go up the ridge. Everyone else went to the flat lunch spot. They then went to Soldiers Pass Trail, to the Seven Pools area, to the sinkhole and back to the cars where most left.

Those of us who went up the ridge descended partway---then, went cross country to the trail to the arches---adjacent to the flat rock---then, down through the arches to a route that short cutted our return, and, via Seven Pools, the sinkhole, and back to the trailhead.

We had some seldom seen people join us---the Cherows, Karl, Nancy---even Chuck Bame came to see us off.

We had three categories of attendees---FHC who are not part of Meetup but get my emails, FHC and Flagstaff Activity Group who are Meetupers.

    Tommorow, I will add photographs.

Note---the comment, below, was for a question about the West Fork of Oak Creek backpack in late May.

There is no wading THIS Saturday.
