Nippersink Creek

Leisurely paddle down the Nippersink Creek from Keystone Road Landing in Richmond to Pioneer Road Landing at 7405 Pioneer Road, Richmond, IL.  This  is a beautiful and relaxing 4 hour downstream-paddle down 6.7 miles of one of the nicest streams in northern Illinois.  The part of the Creek we will paddle in entirely within Glacial Park;  the stream winds through open prairie and wooded areas.  Usually there are lots of waterfowl to be seen.

Here is a link to a map of Nippersink Creek:  http://www.mccdistrict.org/web/assets/maps/NippersinkCanoeTrail_Squarefold%20map_0313%20FINAL-web.pdf

We will need to coordinate dropping off the kayaks and canoes at the put-in at Keystone Landing, and dropping off  the cars at the Pioneer Road take out point.

I have been scouting for rental outfits and livery service;  so far I've found Ed's Rental in McHenry rents canoes for use on the Nippersink.  They are about 10 minutes away from our put-in, and rent a 15' canoe for $35.  They also have canoe trailers available for $25 that would hold up to 6 canoes.  As of Tuesday, they have 6 canoes available for Saturday.  If you would like to rent from Ed's for the day, give them a call at[masked]-3232.  If I can locate kayak rentals or livery service, I'll update the meet up details.

7/18 Update:  Another rental option!  Tip A Canoe out of Burlington rents kayaks and canoes for use on the Nippersink.  The $55 rental fee includes dropping the boat (plus PFD and paddle) off at the put in, and picking it up at the take out.  They have single kayaks, 10' and 12'.  If we have anyone renting from them, they will also help us shuttle our drivers for those with owned boats, although with the group size we currently have, we will easily be able to shuttle ourselves.  If you want to rent from Tip A Canoe, please call them at[masked]-1012.

As always, Illinois residents will need the Ilinois Water Usage stamp.  Everyone should bring your PFD.  Although Nippersink Creek connects to the Chain, we will NOT need Chain O'Lakes (Fox Waterway) stickers, we'll be taking out before they are needed.

Bring your lunch with you and we can enjoy a picnic together in the park at the Pioneer Road take-out.

Good back to nature trip, lots to see. Everyone watched out for each other and waited their turn to go thru the snags. Very congenial group. Thanks Karen.

I'm interested, but not sure how the return to the start will work out; have arrangements been made between you already? I have my own kayak so would be bringing it.....thanks!

Hi Cyndi! We are all going to meet at the put-in, and unload our boats and gear. One person will stay there while all the rest of us drive our vehicles to the take-out. At the take out, we will lock up our vehicles, and pile into as few vehicles as possible and return to the put-in, leaving as many cars as we can at the take out. We will set out on the water from the put-in, leaving behind a few locked vehicles. After our trip, one driver will take the people back to the put in who left their cars there, and return to the take out and everyone can load up. It's more complicated to write out than to do!
