Shoot a Full Moon Set with a pier & sailboats in the foreground at Crystal Beach

This is a unique chance to photograph the full moon setting at the same time the sun is rising.  This happens only on the morning before the full moon rise.  We'll start along the beach and speed out along the shore.  Their will be moored sailboats and a small pier/fishing dock to use a foreground elements.  The moon sets at 7:23 and the sun sets at 7:18.  This will offer one of the best times this year to photograph the setting moon this year.

Tripods are helpful but not mandatory, you can use higher ISOs and just the railing of the pier to aid in supporting your camera.

Robert, you're welcome. I was surprised when Jeff told me he had an app to track moon sets too. Before that, I thought he had a giant slide rule in his garage.

I was walking down County Line Road in Wesley Chapel at 6:45AM with my puppies as I do every morning when I am here and the whole time was watching the moon. I knew what time it was and saw the position and did think the timing was not right. To quote a phrase "What a difference a day makes......." Real Estate is Location, Location, Location. People and Photography is Timing, Timing, Timing. Thanks for that app. And here I thought Jeff danced around a fire at midnight wearing a grass skirt and shrunken head on a stick, in hand, howling at the sky to get these timings. I am disappointed and now, have to remove that image from my mind.

Robert, did you take any photos of the moon set Friday morning?

Thursday's blessing would have been that the sun rose about five minutes before the moon set, so there was just the right amount of light to illuminate the foreground.

Friday morning’s sunrise was still 7:18, but the moon didn't set until 8:23 and I would expect the much brighter sunlight to washout the effect of the moon.

The moon was beautiful Wednesday morning too, but the moon set at 6:21, so there was nothing to illuminate the foreground.

Jeff pointed me to an app that gives times and shows locations, but it takes experience I don't have to identify/visualize an appropriate foreground. It's free for Mac & PC, but there's a small fee for mobile. http://photoephemeris.com/

Had a wonderful time. Friendly people and beautiful setting. Wish there had been less clouds on the horizon while moon was setting but weather was great.

Thanks for the info Jim. I will try and get there early. I agree with you and don't want to miss the chance for the perfect shot :)

I've missed more than one moon set photo op, by arriving on time, so I definitely plan to be there by 6 AM. Don't make the same mistake I did, SET means below the horizon and the moon often goes behind clouds or into a mist 30 minutes before that. Of course, when it does that, it sometimes reappears for a few seconds, so that those who have patience can take that perfect shot. I haven't been to Crystal Beach in 20 years, so I'm really looking forward to this.

Yes, while 6AM is early for most. I was seeing 6:45 as kind of tight given the 7:23 setting of ole Mr. Moon. that's around 30 minutes to get in position, set up, test shots and what not. I always have one, but in the dark it is always great to bring a little LED pen light. Shooting Sweet 16 parties offered insight to not being able to see in the dark. We are, after all, not superman.

I see the time changed, It thought I originally saw that we were to meet at 6:AM. I see 6:45AM now. Maybe misread on my part.
