MacDill AirFest 2014

McDill Airfest 2014

featuring the Air Force Thunderbirds

Members, dust off your telephoto lenses and get ready to head to MacDill AFB to see the Thunderbirds perform overhead. MacDill AirFest 2014 in Tampa, Florida is a 2 day air show event open to the public. The gates to the free event open at 8am and the Tampa air show starts at 9 AM and ends 5 PM on both Saturday and Sunday. The annual AirFest at MacDill Air Force Base attracts over 750,000 people to watch flight demonstrations over the South Tampa air field.

The 2014 MacDill AirFest features the Thunderbirds, the US Airforce's Flight Demonstration Squadron. The Thunderbirds fly in close to 70 air shows each year at about 35 air show locations. Each year the MacDill Air Force Base rotates the flight demonstrators so the AirFest is different each year. The last time the Thunderbirds performed at McDill was in the 2011 MacDill AirFest.

Other demonstrations at the MacDill AirFest 2014 air show will be announced as more details are released.

Car pooling will be available from the Target parking lot at Clearwater Mall.  More details will be announced as we get closer to the date.  Below are some images from past shows.  We look forward to the return of the Airfest and hope that you can join us for this truly great experience.

Great performances! I agree with you too, Breana. The military personnels are wonderful. I just didn't meet anybody from the group. Maybe I didn't recognize them. Really had a great time even with the traffic & sunburn.

Great show, we went later, but glad due to now being a lobster even though I used sunscreen. Really enjoyed the show and the company! Thanks for driving Denise!

Fantastic show. Even though it was hot, it was phenomenal. Id go back tomorrow if it didnt take almost three hours to get home. Didnt have a chance to go into the planes because the lines were long, the little kids were unruly, and I needed to protect my surgically repaired foot. The performances were magnificent and I had my own personal Air Traffic Controller who forgot his camera, so in exchange for copies of my pictures, I shot and he gave directions a la Jeff on Flight Night at Safety Harbor. If you didnt go today, GO TOMORROW. You will not regret it.

Had an amazing time. The shows were wonderful. They really gave us great performances. The Thunderbirds were incredible, as well as the other pilots. Loved the jumpers too. All of the military personnel were very friendly and accommodating. Only downside is, it took us just over 2 hours to get off base. Even with the traffic, it was worth it and I can't wait to go again next year. On a final note, we not only have the BEST Air Force, but also the hottest!

The air show was great. Traffic getting out, not so much. All in all it was a great time.

It was fun. Didn't know where anyone was, but I did talk to quite a few out there who were shooting canon white lenses. Still not sure if I want the[masked]mm or the 300 f4. Both had great reviews from the shooters. Seems everyone were pro photographers.

No telling if I'll make it with traffic and security slowing us down, but my Plan A is to meet the Base Public Affairs Officer Lt Gargan at his booth in front of Hanger #3 at 9 AM. Lt Gargan asked everyone in FCCP to stop by and share photo tips and to call him on his cell[masked], if you have any problems.

I will be at the Target in the morning. I can either drive 3 others or carpool with someone.

Part of an AirFest is like a car show and involves walking from plane to plane in the parking area in front of the hangers or walking around inside the hangers. About the only place you'll find any shade is inside the hangers.

    - - - - - The other part of an AirFest is like a concert in the park. I expect to spend my time at the event standing, but if you think you'll need to sit, I recommend bringing a folding chair or reserving a seat. Seats will sell out, so if interested get one NOW. https://event.attendstar.com/event/show/macdill-airfest-2014/

    - - - - - It's been several years since I've been to an AirFest, but in the past I've purchased, beer, soda, water and hot dogs and I expect they will offer a few other things to munch on. - - - - - Hope this helps!

So I have a camera bag\back pack that I normally attach my tripod to the bottom of. If they don't permit it can I just leave it in my car? I have also purchased a reserved seat as it's going to be a long day.

I tried to call the number Jim gave, using ext. 6, and the box is full - cant leave a message, or get a human. Do you know if there is a separate section for handicapped seating? Also wondering, from people who have been to the show before, if the reserved seats, at $15 each, really give you an advantage?

I got through to the base switchboard[masked] Press 0, but keep getting cut off, before I get through to anyone who can answer questions. I think their phone system is overwhelmed as will be parking, seating, etc. The webpage says this is the first year they've sold seat tickets and as far as I remember, they didn't provide any seating to the public in the past, though they may have provided a few for handicapped. I personally wouldn't count on a seat being available for free, so I suggest reserving a seat or bringing your own. Seats are going fast and will sell out, so if interested get one now. https://event.attendst... - - - - - I'm not going to be around until late this evening, so feel free to look at the website or try to call the base yourself, if you have other questions.

I was going try the number Jim had posted initially, with the extension 6, but the post with that number has been taken down along with my post that said you are allowed to bring folding chairs., which I verified yesterday. I'm sorry, I'm not at home, so can't get the number off the phone.

    Is there a meeting place?

    March 21, 2014

  • Jim L

Sorry for the backpack scare this morning. I just spoke with the MacDill Public Affairs Officer. He said camera bags should be ok, but be prepared to have them searched. At this morning's meeting Jeff said to be sure to remove any sharp objects, knives, leatherman tools, etc, but the PAO said tripods are OK. Lt Gargan said call him at[masked], for any problems of any kind. He also invited all of us to stop by his Public Affairs Booth across from Hanger 3 as they will be taking photos at the event too and would like to share tips.

Don't forget the gates open at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday March 22 & 23. Expect airport style security, so don't bring anything to the show that you wouldn't bring on an airline flight. Unfortunately, backpacks are on the list of Prohibited Items. ***Prohibited Items***
Coolers, hard or soft; glass containers; pets; fireworks; knives; weapons of any sort regardless if you have a permit for it; and large bags or backpacks are all prohibited to ensure the security and safety of attendees. No setting up of personal tents, pop-ups, large/beach umbrellas, awnings or other items that block the view of other visitors. Any and all objects are prohibited at the discretion of Security Forces personnel checking bags at the gate.
