Fort De Soto Beach is considered to be one fo the Top 10 Birding Hot Spots in the nation. Yet to locals, it's just that park with the old fort. Many local residents have been there since they were kids.
We typically see all the Egrets, Herons (including Reddish Egrets) and many differen species of shore birds and terns. They is an active Bald Eagel nest that make it easy to obeserve Eagles from November through March, most years. There is also an active Great Horned Owl nest that can be observed from December through April.
There is a $5 entrance fee that may be paid with cash at the entrance gate. If there is not attendent, pull through the gate and about 200 yards further, there is a Pay Station that will take credit cards. Please pay, the tickets are expensive and all the entrance fees go to benefit the parks.
We park at the very end of the North Beach parking lot. This gives us easiest access to the beach.
Car pooling will be available for those interested. We'll meet in the Target parking lot at Clearwater Mall at 6:00 AM.
