2014 WINTER WEDNESDAY HIKING SERIES - HIKE #6

  • Feb 12, 2014 · 9:00 AM

Winter is a great time to hike in Florida. This will be the 20th year that this mid-week hiking group has gone out each Wednesday in January, February & March to participate in a 7-9 mile day hike. This year the hikes will cover the FNST in the Ocala National Forest. The plan is to hike the Eastern Corridor trail from Rodman Reservoir to Clearwater Lake. Hikers will also explore some side trails, springs, sinkholes & the Western Corridor trail. Some camping & paddle trips will be added to the series this year. Mark your calendars and clear your schedule on Wednesdays so you can join the group and “HIKE THE FOREST!”

OCALA NATIONAL FOREST FNST - EASTERN CORRIDOR - HIKE 6: Hike from the FR 11-Kerr Curve access to the FR 33-FNST crossing -  7.6 miles. Meet at 9:00 AM at the junction of Forest Road 54 & Forest Road 33. Purchase FTA maps 19 & 20.

Plugging Kathryn's coordinates (in the thread below) into Google generates a nice printable map. Thanks Kathryn as I did not look back at this hike until the night before

Rachael and Lou: a old fashion Google or MapQuest map to the meeting place would be great. I will post one, as a reply to this note, and you can authenticate if it is correct. Thanks MJ ((:

Big help Kathryn: I will see if I can link a map.

Be careful as Google still shows FR 90, rather than FR 54, and Rachel confirmed the FR numbers changed for some.

Kathryn's coordinates bring up FR 90 and FR 33 intersection, is FR "54" an error?

    February 11, 2014

    • Mark

Just spoke to Rachel and the FR numbers have changed: Google still shows FR 90 for the numbers Kathryn provides, but Rachel confirm Kathryn's location, where the FT crosses FR 33.

Is this a loop trail, or will we need to arrange rides back to our cars?

    February 7, 2014

    • Brad. FTA, fishing, c.

We meet in a group at the end of the hike and take all the people and half the cars to the start. All the hikes pretty much require a shuttle as they are linear on the FNST.

Not sure they can come yet, but would it be OK to bring a guest?

Todd, guests are welcome as always.
