Aloha Stringbusters,

Mark your ukulele calendar! On January 18th, we are inviting Fred Sokolow to South Florida to do a workshop and a mini concert.

Fred Sokolow is best known for the 150 instructional books and videos he’s written for guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, and ukulele. As a performer he has played with the likes of John Herald, Tom Paxton, Jimmy Reed, Frank Wakefield, Ian Whitcomb, Jody Stecher, Bobby Gentry, Janet Klein and Jerry Garcia and opened for the Grateful Dead, the Doors, B.B. King, and Country Joe and the Fish. He has contributed to numerous TV and movie soundtracks, commercials and “other people’s recordings,” as well as his own jazz and bluegrass CDs. He also continues to produce instructional books and videos, including his best-selling “Fretboard Roadmaps” series. His uke books include “Fretboard Roadmaps for Ukulele,” (written with Jim Beloff) “Blues Ukulele,” “Bluegrass Ukulele,” and the just-released 3-DVD “Complete Ukulele Guide.” Three more uke books of Fred’s will soon be in print as well, one of them in three languages!

Fred shows you the visual patterns on the fretboard that help you understand how music works and enable you to play all over the fretboard (chords or single-note solos) in any key. You'll learn about chord relationships, common chord progressions and how to play them, and you'll learn several soloing strategies, to go beyond just strumming. There'll be at least a few "light bulb moments" where lots of musical bits and pieces come together in a coherant picture. Bring your instrument and expect to do lots of playing as well as listening!

Not only are you going to learn the Blues, you're going to learn and understand the road map of the ukulele fretboard. A little advance but very informative! This workshop is hosted by Kumu Mapuana. Mahalo sis.

Sorry, Roni I was coming from a lesson in Davie. Couldn't stay long at the workshop but it was very informative and fun playing the blues. Something to work on....

I love learning more about the mystery of playing music on the ukulele, which isn't really as mysterious anymore, as Fred Sokolow unraveled the patterns of playing up the neck and gave me a better understanding of my instrument. I also loved the performance, and being able to say I played along with someone as distinguished in the music world as Fred Sokolow. Thank you so much to Mr. Sokolow, Ty and Mapuana and the Florida Ukulele Network for making this workshop available.

I'm very excited about this event. I have numerous instruction videos and books by Fred. He is great at making people understand the basics of ALL music. I'm sure this workshop will help to improve any player at any level. And I can't wait to see our host, Mapuana again. She is a beautiful talent and spirit.

It's a bit far and I'm a raw novice, but I'll see if I can make it Friday.
