What we're about

International folk dancing is great exercise and a wonderful way to make friends. International folk dances come from both traditional and modern ethnic dances from countries all over the world. Click here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKMkDssG3PA) to see a video of what folk dancing is all about. No partner, special clothing, or multi-week commitment is needed. Just show up in casual cloths and comfortable shoes. There is no need to bring a partner. People of all ages and dance ability will enjoy folk dancing The majority of our members are middle aged or beyond, but we are starting to attract younger members and people occasionally bring their children. Many of our members are single, but we also have a number of couples. (Most couples dance with other people as well.) Some of our dancers have danced professionally and others had never danced before they joined us. Most of our dances are easy to learn, but we have a few that are quite vigorous and/or complicated, but well worth the effort. Dancers feel free to sit down and socialize when a dance is too difficult for them. No one will pressure you into doing a dance that seems too difficult for you, but we provide lots of help and encouragement. Some of the music we dance to is so beautiful that it will take you breath away! Our members have formed many long-term friendships and, over the years, we have become a community. In Southern California there are about 50 different folk dance groups. This Meetup group will help you to find a folk dance group near you. Also on this site you will find announcements of special parties and festivals involving international folk dancing. Finally, this Meetup group serves as a communication conduit for existing members of the folk dance community. Give international folk dancing a try, you won't regret it.

Dance with the Pasadena Folk Dance Co-op $6

Altadena Community Church

If you would like to have a taste of international folk dancing to see if you like it, we highly recommend you join us at 7:30 pm on a Friday night for about 20 minutes of introductory teaching. We know it is difficult to walk into a room full of strangers, so our group makes a real effort to help people new to folk dancing feel welcome and comfortable. In this main, Friday night group, we generally teach the same dances all month long, recognizing that it can take a while for the dances to sink in. Afterwards, if you wish, you can stay, join in, or watch as we dance the dances taught in the previous month, and present another, more difficult dance. At 8:30 pm we break for refreshments. Afterwards, the dances you learned in introductory teaching will be repeated. Repetition is one of the keys to learning dances. Throughout the evening we will have a mix of dances, including some you can simply join in, follow along, and have fun with. You don't need to RSVP - most of our dancers don't.
