• "Is My Server Suffering From Memory Pressure?" with David Bland

Please join us for David Bland's presentation on "Is My Server suffering from Memory Pressure?" on August 7th at 5:30 PM. "As we all know, SQL Server loves memory and will use as much as it can get. However, when there is memory pressure we need to use our DBA skills to identify what is causing the pressure. During this session we will explore how SQL Server uses memory and how to properly configure memory settings. We will discuss the use of DMVs and other tools to help us find what is consuming the most memory and some potential solutions." David and his insights can be followed here: Twitter: https://twitter.com/SQLDave29 Blog: http://davebland.com/ A little bit about David: "Over 20 years of SQL Server experience that includes being a DBA, BI development and Application development using VB.NET. • What Else Can Indexes Do?

    Secura (East Building)

Please join us for the presentation on June 5th at Secura Insurance (East Building) where we will have special guest Erik Darling from Erik Darling Data. (Erik will be remote for this session) Erik Darling started using SQL Server after a dispute with Excel over a vlookup. Since then he's had some terribly boring DBA jobs, and been a consultant for Some Guy You've Never Heard Of™(Brent Ozar). He enjoys public arguments with optimizer and wine photography. You can find out more on his official website: https://erikdarlingdata.com/ A little bit about the discussion: "Lots of sessions about indexes give you technical, but not practical information. It's not that the information is bad, it's just that you can't take it and apply it to your problems. In this session, we're gonna dive deep into how queries use indexes, and the warning signs you'll see when you have a problem indexing can solve. We're going to be looking at query plan stuff like memory grants, spools, and lookups. We're also going to look at how indexes can give you a leg up on locking. And best of all, you'll learn how to stop worrying about fragmentation and start fixing real problems."

  • Tracking Data Transformations Using Temporal Tables

    Secura (East Building)

Please join us for the presentation on May 1st at the Secura Insurance (East Building) where we will have special guest Thomas M. Lane, PhD from Talavant. Thomas has been living and breathing Microsoft databases for over twenty years and is now relishing his position as a DW Consultant at Talavant (www.Talavant.com). After receiving his Ph.D. in Chemistry and following three years as a post-doc at Marquette University, Thomas left the world of science for a career in IT. He has worked as a programming and database instructor, a VB and C# developer, and for the past fourteen years worked with SQL server as a DBA, ETL specialist, and Data Architect at various Midwestern companies. A little bit about Thomas's discussion: "Along with change tracking and change data capture, Microsoft has introduced a new method for tracking data changes within its databases called Temporal tables. Microsoft introduced temporal, or system-versioned, tables in SQL Server 2016 as a new database feature. A temporal table truly introduces two tables into the mix: one for current data and another for historical data. This talk will show how the feature is implemented and used along with a discussion on the common usage for temporal tables. Scripts will be explored for the automation of the creation of temporal tables along with its use in data warehousing."

  • SQL Server Management Studio Tips and Tricks

    Secura (East Building)

Please join us for the presentation on April 3rd at the Secura Insurance (East Building) where we will have special guest Gary D. Schultz from West Bend Mutual Insurance. Gary is a production DBA and Systems Engineer for West Bend Mutual Insurance (TheSilverLining.com). A little bit about Gary's discussion: "Work smarter, not harder. Increase your productivity in coding and management of SQL server by understanding some of the “hidden” gems in SSMS, Visual Studio and Powershell IDE’s. Knowing just a few basic regular expressions could save you a lot of effort and there are some very useful extensions cost nothing to implement. There are also some newer features in the latest SSMS that you may not have had time to investigate. This talk will be one long demo, which will hopefully have something for every level of SQL server user or developer."

  • "Locking and its effects on queries and maintenance tasks" with Jacob Manske

Please join us for the presentation on December 5th at the Skyline Technologies Garage where we will have special guest Jacob Manske discussing "Locking and its effects on queries and maintenance tasks". A description of the talk: "Multi-user systems are affected by how SQL Server locks resources to manage concurrent transactions. Understanding how SQL Server uses locks to isolate transactions from one another is important for both writing code and running maintenance tasks. In this session, we will discuss lock modes in SQL Server and how they impact your queries. We will show how different isolation levels change which locks are taken and for how long they are held. We will look at ways to avoid unnecessary blocking for maintenance tasks like index rebuilds. Assertions will be backed up with demo-based evidence. After this session, you will have the understanding you need to start writing application code and maintenance jobs suitable for concurrent systems by anticipating blocking issues due to locking." You can also join the meeting through Skype found here: https://meet.lync.com/talavant/turner.kunkel/FH36QQNC Thank you!
