On Sunday, September 8, 2019 a bike ride from Fletcher's Boathouse to the National Harbor is planned. Meet at Fletcher's Boathouse at 8:30, the ride will start around 9:00 to beat the heat. It is 90% flat and a small roadway section through Alexandria. Once at the Harbor, we can decide on length of a break at National Harbor for exploring the sights and lunch, the restaurants and the farmers market. I'm not sure of the total distance, around 30 miles. There is long incline to the center of Woodrow Wilson Bridge over the Potomac from either direction. The views from the bump-outs on the bridge are awesome. A bit of a challenge for beginners, but can be done. A Hybrid or road bikes are ok for this ride. On the Md. Side returning there is a cork screw ramp to the rest area over 495. From the Bridge to the Harbor is a short paved path. Please bring a bike lock to secure the bike while you walk around town.
Please RSVP to [masked] so we don't leave without all attending.
Directions to Fletcher's Boathouse:
From 495, take the Glen Echo exit onto the Clara Barton Parkway. Follow the Clara Barton Parkway until it becomes Canal Road which was reopened July 16 after storm damage. Continue on Canal Road until the entrance of Fletcher's at Canal and Reservoir. Fletcher's is located on the right side of the road and you will see the Abner Cloud House, an old stone building next to the canal. The entrance is a 180 degree turn and there is not enough room to maneuver. You can not access the entrance by turning up Reservoir Rd, Make u turn at first intersection and then crossing Canal Rd with the help of the Traffic light. Parking is available on both sides of the canal, but look for us in the upper lot. To reach the west side parking lot, go through the auto tunnel, which takes you under the canal.
