In this lecture the medieval technique of appealing to written authority illuminates the legacy of literature and authorship in modern Nordic literature. The legacy of this prose stories provides the heritage and inspiration for some of Scandinavia's most powerful modern authoresses. We will look especially at the work of the Nobel laureate Sigird Undset, whose ethnographic and historical medieval novels further reveal the enduring truth of the past from the perspective of the present.
