This is a 30-40 minute talk followed by discussion and conversation. The aim is to explore the impact of environmentalism on Psychology in relation to its core commitment to being firmly grounded within a rigorous scientific tradition. Common definitions of environmentalism relate to both concerns/ actions aimed at protecting the environment and the theory that environment, as opposed to heredity, has the primary influence on the development of a person or group.
Early environmentalist psychologists were determined to adhere to rigorous scientific methods. Developments in psychology, the evolution of scientific methods and advancements in technology have changed in the past century. Nowadays psychology is a vast field with many specialisms but at its core, still committed to science. This talk raises questions about how environmentalism and Psychology have diverged.
