CH 50 Iron Butt Ride

  • Jun 14, 2014 · 6:00 AM

Dan Rickman, President of Chapter 50 has asked me to post this in case anyone would be Interested in Joining Chapter 50 to earn their Iron Butt Patch. More details to Follow as Dan Shares them.

As many of you know some of our brothers and sisters will be headed to Tennessee this weekend for a week of fun on the Tail of the Dragon. Many more of us are wishing we were going with them but aren't able to do so...butt (pun intended) wait, why should we miss out on all the fun. How many of you have heard of the Iron Butt patch, who would be in for earning one??? Well the Iron Butt patch is awarded for those hard core riders who are willing to brave 1000 miles in the saddle within a 24 hr period or 1500 in 36 hrs. Well, as chance would have it, one of our brothers, Steve Force, will be returning from Tennessee solo and plans to get his Iron Butt along the way. I am planning to ride out and meet him roughly mid way and ensure his safe return to Houston...also earning my Iron Butt in the process. I am asking those brave and hardened few who possess the desire, the courage, and an adventurous spirit to join in the fun and help me see our brother home safe and earn recognition given to few but admired by many!!!

I will be coordinating with Steve over the next week for specifics but the ride will occur over the weekend of June 14th and 15th and details will be added to this meetup as they are confirmed. This will be a low cost adventure...all you will need is fuel and food funds...we will not be stopping and staying anywhere. You will want to be sure you and your ride are prepared as well as possible...I will post a list of suggested items that will make the ride as safe and comfortable as possible. This is not a ride for the beginner or the faint of heart so please consider your ability to make it the full distance when RSVPing. More details to follow.

No worries Glenn. Happens to all of us. Best of luck on that deadline and we'll catch on the next one. Meanwhile keep the shiny side up!

I have to back out. I thought it was a round trip coming back to Houston, so I can't do it. Wish I could.

Glen perhaps I created some confusion by posting the full route to pigeon forge but it is a round trip. We are only going to the mid point denoted by B on the route map. Steve is coming from the other direction and then we are all returning to our starting point in Tomball.

Ok here is a link to the route plan: http://mapq.st/1hA19ur

Location B denotes the location where we will meet up with Steve as he makes his way from Pigeon Forge. I chose this location because it is roughly mid-way and it represents a "corner" as defined in the IBA rules. From here we will find a nice big truck stop nearby where we can assess our schedule and recover for a time before completing our adventure. This route was chosen for a couple of reasons. First it should provide us with a fairly scenic path as we make our way up to the rally location. Secondly, we will be returning during the night time hours so we will return along the same route. Last, but not least, should anyone run into challenges along the way to meet our FCRC brother (which is our primary mission, IBA is secondary!), one or more of us can continue on to the rally point and return to any member who may not have been able to continue for whatever reason...the result is we all come home together.

We are finalizing a route plan but it looks like we will be leaving from Tomball, 249 & 2920 (Address to follow). KSU will be 9:00 AM Saturday the 14th. We will be covering a little over 1000 miles and some very pretty country along the way. Once the route is finalized I will post a link to it. This will be a documented Iron Butt Association Saddle Sore 1000 so be sure to review the site link Steve posted. We will arrange Start and Finish Witnesses but receipts and log documentation with be up to each of us.

I did RSVP and absolutely want to do this but I have to stop about every 110 miles due to small tank. I don't want to hold anyone back so want to know if I still qualify to go.

Glen, that shouldn't be a problem at all.

Sounds like fun, but my butt gets to be a real pain in my ass after about 500 miles of steady riding. Have fun!

Anybody interested needs to read the rules, and requirements on the Iron Butt website you need to fulfill all of them to insure getting the certificate. Here's a link to the info pertaining to this one:
