Workshop Schedule

Friday July 20, 2012 (6:00pm - 9:00pm)

In this lecture Bert Stephani will talk about his work, style and vision. Bert will share many tips of how thinking outside the box got his career kickstarted and how it keeps him fresh in an industry that keeps changing at the speed of light: from improvising lighting setups, over non-traditional advertising to creating new markets. But Bert will also talk about the mistakes, the hard work and the passion it takes be a photographer.

You won't get a brain-washing-pep-talk-success-story that makes you feel like you can be the next Helmut Newton if you follow some magic formula. But you will get a fun, fresh and honest take on photography that will hopefully inspire you to go out and become a better photographer.

Saturday, July 21, 2012 (9:00am - 6:00pm+)

We’ll start the day with a lesson in choosing the right gear for the job and then we’ll move on to establishing a workflow that will make lighting a lot easier and allow you to get more out of your subject. We'll proceed with an in-depth study of the most important lighting setups with both speedlights and studio lights.

Great light is all about subtlety, so during a number of exercises we’ll pay a lot attention to the fine art of flash placement, feathering, choosing the right modifiers and blending flash with the available light.
After lunch, Bert will present you with some lighting challenges and assist you on bringing them to a visually pleasing end.

Bert always fills his workshops with lots of small tips and hints that can make a huge difference. There will be also plenty of room for questions.

Sunday July 22, 2012 (8:00 - 4:00pm+)

After a quick recap of what we've learned on day 1, you'll be given a number of assignments in small groups. Some of the exercises are about growing and perfecting your technical skills. Other exercises will focus more on using those skills in order to convey emotions and tell stories. Bert will always be right by your side to offer guidance, ideas and demonstrate how he would tackle the situation. At the end of the second day, it's your turn to come up with an assignment for Bert.

Bert's workshops are packed with useful real life information and at the same time Bert's teaching style guarantees you'll have a great time while learning to make great portraits.

What to Bring

At a minimum you will need to have a camera with full manual control capability and a hot-shoe to attach an external flash. (NOTE: If you own a SONY camera make sure you have an adapter for a standard hot shoe)

You are welcome to bring your own flash, wireless triggers, reflectors, etc... just make sure all your equipment is clearly labeled so it doesn't end up in someone else's bag.

We will have flashes, triggers, stands, and various other studio equipment for all the participants to share.

It is recommended that you bring pen and paper to take notes. Bert will make workshop materials, such as the lecture slides, available for participants to download after the workshop.

Lunch is included with your workshop fee each day of the workshop. This will be a quick lunch which will be brought to our location so we can keep learning with minimal interruption. There will be water and soft drinks available throughout the day as well. If you have any special dietary needs, make sure you let us know so we can accommodate you. Breakfast and dinner are on your own.

Traveling to West Palm Beach

The West Palm Beach airport (PBI) is the closest airport to the workshop location. Alternatives are Fort Lauderdale (FLL), located about 1 hour away, and Miami (MIA), located about 1.5 hours away.

The location for the workshop is still being finalized so make sure to bookmark this page and keep an eye out for updates. All participants will receive e-mail updates about any changes in schedule or location.
