RE-SCHEDULED Civil War New York: From Union Square to Bleecker Street

This is the NEW DATE for the tour postponed from May 11 due to thunderstorm warnings--keep your fingers crossed for more cooperative weather!

Premiere of this season's new tour!

Come with us on this tour devoted exclusively to events and personages of the Civil War era in this important area of the city. Hear tales of the exiled Irish patriots that formed the famous “Fighting 69th”;  the luxurious salon of photography pioneer Mathew Brady; the out-of-control spending of Mary Todd Lincoln in the metropolis’s biggest store; the ugly Draft Riots and their threat to this neighborhood; the wartime division within the thespian Booth family with tragic consequences for the entire nation; the “Fairy Wedding” that brought a sorely-needed bit of levity to town, courtesy of none other than PT Barnum;  and the fateful night that Abraham Lincoln made his bid for the Presidency at the Great Hall of a relatively new venue called The Cooper Union.  All this and more, as we discover New York City’s Civil War past.

Where to meet: Meet outside Pret a Manger, Broadway and West 17 Street.

When to meet: 12:45 for a 1pm start. I will be holding a sign that reads, "Civil War Union Square".

Train: Take the 4,5,6,L, N,R to "Union Square/14 Street" and  you're right there; all other trains to their respective "14 Street" stations will leave you some avenue blocks away.

Fee: $15 cash, exact change appreciated!

The tour will be approximately 2/2.5 hours long. While Friendly Native tours walk rain or shine 99.9% of the time, on rare occasions they will be postponed in cases of what can be deemed dangerous weather, and an email sent out to that effect to all who have registered for the event.   Check the weather reports on the day of the tour; if there is a chance of rain, please bring your own umbrella.

The nearest restrooms to this location are inside Pret a Manger, on the second floor. Make a small purchase and use the facilities as a customer.  Please be sure to "take care of things" before the start of the tour!

Excellent! A great tour and presentation! At each stop, Linda's accounts of the sites, events, and personalities of the Civil War era provided interesting and surprising nuggets of information. A nice group; glad to be one of the beneficiaries of Linda's extensive research. Many thanks for a fun and rewarding afternoon!

Hot time in the old town yesterday afternoon, but the Friendly Walkers were game as we were successful in finding a shady side of the street on almost every stop while we explored this neighborhood's considerable Civil War past. Glad to see tour veterans Donna, Alba, Lynn, both Susans, Tanya, Anna, Aurelia, and Carrie, as well as welcome over Avra and Joe from the Gotham group. Newbies included Mary, Melanie, Randa, Gerry, Jim, and Nachum. Thanks to all for making this a very successful premiere!

Outstanding. I am a Lincolnite and on my third autobiography- this time Mary. So much new information that I will probably never have the opportunity to read myself. A warm day. but we managed to stay in the shade to the hear the good stuff about the New York based sites where both Lincolns left their mark. Linda does honor to these legendary Americans....I liked Tom Thumb and PT Barnum.Who knew this famous showman was a contemporary of the Lincolns? Always love the opportunity to continue chatting with Linda as she rehydrates.

We met PT Barnum before at a Gotham circus exhibit And attended a service and a historic tour of Grace Church through Gotham.

So looking forward to this tour...Mary Todd Lincoln truly did spend lots of money in NYC to keep up her wardrobe.
    It wasn't all about Abe.....

Reading a biography of Mary Todd Lincoln by Jean H. Baker. Prep for this long awaited adventure back in time once again with our amazing leader, Linda.
