[backpackers-190] Please support the nomination for Martin Kubik for the 3M Community Volunteer Award -- DEADLINE IS AUGUST 2

Hello fellow Friends of BWCA Trails (and BWAC Committee) members,

I am nominating Martin Kubik for a 3M Community Volunteer Award. Information about the award is listed below.

3M Community Volunteer Award

It's said that volunteers are the unsung heroes of the world. Not at 3M. We sing their praises loud and clear. Volunteerism is one of 3M's greatest assets, linked to our corporate values and part of our tradition.

The 3M Community Volunteer Award annually recognizes employees and retirees who make exceptional contributions by volunteering in their communities. Twenty-five U.S. employee and retiree volunteers will be saluted for their outstanding efforts at local celebrations. In addition, $1,000 is donated to a qualified nonprofit organization of each winner's choice.

A panel of community leaders, representing various types of nonprofit organizations, reviews all nominated volunteers and selects those who best exemplify 3M's commitment to volunteerism that enhances the quality of life in our communities. Winners are selected from across the United States.

I would like to get 2-10 letters of support for Martin's nomination to strengthen the nomination. What do you put in this letter of support? Well, this is what I'm saying that Martin does:

? Organized and trained volunteers to clear trails.
? Lead trail maintenance trips to the BWCA.
? Increased the awareness of this resource for anyone who wants to hike or backpack in the BWCA by providing brochures and educational presentations and trail guides.
? Lobbied on behalf of BWCA trails with the US Forest Service.
? Taught outdoor skills to BWCA trail clearing volunteers and helped them learn to appreciate the resource and about becoming a public steward for them.
? There are about 200 miles of wilderness trails in the BWCA. He was personally involved in saving about 2/3 of these trails.

You could write a letter telling how Martin introduced you to the BWAC and taught you to clear trails, read a map, paddle a canoe, use a camp stove, camp using the "leave no trace" practice, find a portage in the dark, be aware of your physical limitations so you could hike safely, and whatever else you can think of. You should also mention how the trails looked before a trail-clearing expedition (tree falls blocking the trails, overgrown brush crowding the trails) and how it was a nice hiking trail after a trail clearing trip. Whatever you can say that supports (or even expands upon) the bullet points above would be good to include.

If you send me this please include your connection with Martin (i.e., you are a volunteer that Martin recruited, you are a fellow board member of the BWAC, etc).

Please send this to me by 2 pm Monday, August 2.
(Sorry for the short notice. I didn't know about this requirement until today.)
