  • Calico Early Man Site

This Meetup has been cancelled due to inclement weather.

Come to The Calico Mountains Archaeological Site (Calico Early Man Site) - Learn a little science, have a lot of fun!

Due to the overwhelming response to our Dig Weekends we must limit the number of diggers to 30 per weekend. So the first 30 people that sign up with the Registar ( Dee Suchil) Saturday morning will be the diggers for that weekend.

Digging tools provided. Bring hiking boots, hat, scarf, gloves, Saturday lunch from home.  If you have them, bring magnifying glass and knee pads. The Motel 6 or the Super 8 in Barstow (19 miles), very rough campsites at the dig site (firepits, tables, outhouse only). Or drive in for Saturday only.

Schedule for Saturday, March 1st

9:00 am pits open for digging

12 noon lunch break (bring a lunch from home)

7:00 - 8:30am eggs, pancake, juice, bacon breakfast provided in rangers quarters

Excellent decision, the site will be celebrating 50 years of continued archaeological excavation without a single reportable injury! This is one of the reasons why.

This is a reminder: The March 1 & 2 dig has been cancelled due to weather. Extreme weather in the desert poses some serious safety issues. We want our friends to come out and enjoy a safe and productive dig. It doesn't look like that will be possible at this time. We look forward to seeing you all in April!

Hey Joy! No, if it rains, we will not dig. The ground is VERY slippery and the Bentonite builds up on shoes, etc. Plus, there is a chance of flash-floods whenever it rains in the desert. Keep an eye on Meetup for the latest news about cancellations!

Sorry, Boys and Girls! Due to some troubling weather reports, dig weekend is cancelled for this month. Extreme weather in the desert poses some serious safety issues. Sadly I have to cancel this one D: My grandma was recently in the hospital (no danger now) but parents are out of town, so I gotta stick around just in case. Next month!!

I see that it's supposed to rain on Saturday (70% chance) I'm wondering if the dig is rain or shine?? Please advise :-)

Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself, since I've kind of been loitering. I joined the group when I saw it because I have always wanted to do a dig and this one is close enough and seems to be a great opportunity to dive in. Holidays and other business has kept me from joining the last two months, but I definitely want to do this one. So since I'm completely new to this, I would love (and really appreciate) any advice or words wisdom anyone can give me.

    Can't wait for this!
