*UPDATE: ARCHAEOLOGY WEEKEND CHANGES. PLEASE READ*

  • 6 days ago · 8:30 AM
  • Calico Early Man Site

*UPDATE*

Dear Volunteers,

We apologize for the short notice, but due to the excessive vandalism at the historic Calico Early Man Site over the last few months, the Friends of Calico can no longer host our monthly digs at that location. Instead, we will be conducting archaeological investigations at other sites within the Calico Mountains Archaeological region starting in October.

This change in focus means we are limited to hosting members of the Friends of Calico. If you have been a participant in our past digs, please join The Friends of Calico and come out! The membership is good for one year and will cover your participation for fieldwork in the 2016/2017 dig season.

The new field work locations include both historic and prehistoric sites. Fieldwork activities will include relocation of sites, mapping and surface collecting, and test pit excavations as appropriate. We will be following up at the museum with artifact analysis.

Although we have a few tools (buckets, trowels), we recommend that you bring your own. Also bring anything that you think you might need for being in the middle of the desert, including: hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes, hat(a must for when it is warm!), scarf, gloves, sunscreen, beach chair, snacks, a bagged lunch and lots of water. Please be aware that the new sites are considered "rough" and there will be no available running water or restroom facilities. We will be shuttling people to the sites, so we will be able to take you and your supplies out to the locations.

At this time, the meetup is only for Saturdays.

****The Meet Up Locations and Camping Information

Our meet up location has changed. We will be meeting near the entrance to the Calico entrance road. To get there, just get off Minneola Road, head towards the gas station and we will be down on the surface road past Cali Burger.

The campgrounds that were located at our site are no longer open for use. Please contact the Yermo KOA campground, if you would like to camp before/after our meetup.

For those who are inexperienced or are not Friends of Calico Members and are interested in learning about archaeology and participating in fieldwork, we will be posting meetup times in the near future to work at the museum once a month on the Calico collections (experienced archaeologists are welcome too). This will give you the opportunity to learn about the non-fieldwork aspects of archaeology and to familiarize yourself with what you will be looking for out in the field. You may be able to transition to working out at the sites once you have some museum experience.

You may purchase a membership to Friends of Calico, a non-profit organization, which finances the ongoing scientific investigation. Yearly membership is $45 family, $25 individual, $15 students. Please follow this link and sign up before the dig! http://calicoarchaeology.com/join.html

I look forward to seeing you all there and thank you again for your positive feedback and support. It is greatly appreciated!!

Just a heads up that we'll be meeting at 8:30AM by the Calico sign on Minneola road. This is a time change from previous field work days this season. We'll proceed to the field site from there. It should be fun and the weather looks like it will cooperate. If you are not planning on attending, please let us know soon. Thanks!

Are we still able to camp at the entrance? What can I bring to help out with grub or anything of that nature?
