Hike To Whitney Pocket Amphitheater Overlook with Tom Cluff
We will meet at the junction of Gold Butte Road and Highway 170 at 8:30 a.m. and leave promptly at 8:45 a.m. You'll want sturdy hiking boots, a hat, sunscreen and a pack for your water and lunch; a hiking stick will be helpful. High clearance vehicles are recommended. Please remember to practice leave no trace ethics.
This hike follows a wash we call Horseshoe. We will hike to an overlook area north or west of Whitney Pockets Wash Amphitheater. From the point you’ll have a view into the amphitheater area. From here we’ll hike SW near the rim of the amphitheater and explore the red rocks along the way. We’ll find a lunch spot with a million dollar view and kick back for awhile!
Our return route may take us down a different canyon. It depends on time and what the group wants to do. The alternate route is narrower and steeper than the way we came in. There are some rock scrambles where you may need to use your hands. It’s not really difficult but
somewhat harder than the way we came in. Minor rock scrambling is the fun part of any hike!
When we return to vehicles please check under vehicles for any wildlife such as tortoises that might have taken up residence. This is more important in warmer weather but a good habit to develop at all times. Another good practice is to check you footwear for cholla stickers, they are ubiquitous in the desert quite easy to step on without noticing.
We should be back to the kiosk by 4:00. For more info, call Tom Cluff at[masked]. Please provide your phone number so we can contact you in case of changes or cancellations. If you would like to attend and do not have a suitable vehicle, please let us know as we may be able to arrange a carpool.
