UPDATE 8/8: We are looking good in the weather/air forecast! It will be unlikely this event is canceled, this is one of the observatory's largest annual event. 7:00 if you are tailgating/picnicking 8:30 to meet before it gets dark. So fun to see so many interested folks! :)

UPDATE 8/6: Please read this entire post, especially the part about checking the Observatory website to be sure they are open the day of the event! Unfortunately this year we have smoke and haze to deal with. :( It's been hit and miss with some nights being crystal clear so let's keep our fingers crossed. :)

The Perseid Meteor shower is the most active of the year. It has been one of my favorite annual events since childhood summer camp. Come stargaze and make some wishes! This will be the third year with this group. Bring your chair/blanket/pillow to lay in the grass and just look up! It's very popular so it might be crowded, I've set the meeting time 30 minutes before it opens. Meet in the parking lot at 8:30.

For those of you interested in dinner, we have agreed to meet in the parking lot for a little tailgating activity. 7:00, school policy is no alcohol allowed on the property though, but bring your own picnic food, sharing is optional, look for the green Fun in the Foothill sign, we'll find some space in the shade.

Please read entire post, you (we all) MUST check the observatory site below at 5:00pm that day if there is any question of weather to see if they are closed for any other reason (lack of docents!). Obviously rain/clouds cancels (the roof opens), but even if it is just too moist they may also close as well. And because the roof opens, it may be chilly, so dress in layers and plan to hang out. Also, NO flashlights, food, drinks, etc. You could keep something in your car (thermos of cocoa, tea, etc.) but you cannot bring it into the observatory. See the website for more details. I will connect with them again to let them know we are coming so they can ensure there is enough staff, WHICH IS VOLUNTEER, so please respect their time and let's be courteous to the head count. I told them I would confirm a couple days before. Bring cash to donate. :)
