The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve covers an area of 11,595ha and was named after the Transvaal Suikerbos, (Protea Caffra). The reserve is within an hour's drive of Johannesburg and lies close to the town of Heidelberg. The main feature of the reserve is the Suikerbosrand Mountain Range that forms the backbone of the reserve and varies in height between 1,545m and 1,917m above sea level.

Directions: From Johannesburg, take the N3 highway towards Heidelberg. Take the R550/Alberton Road off-ramp and turn right, across the highway. Turn left to the reserve (large sign that says Suikerbosrand), you will get to an entrance gate where you will pay and then follow that road till you get to a sign that says public parking.
What to bring: Bring water (2 litres), snack, hat and sunscreen Wear good walking shoes! Bring stuff for a picnic - not many places to eat nearby!
Meeting point: We will meet outside the Visitors Centre where the 4 km trail starts.
Distances: There are 3 trails: 4 km - 10 km - 11.5. The 10 and 11.5 km are pretty tough and require a certain level of fitness!
Groups: We are splitting into two groups (the faster 11.5km and the somewhat more relaxed 4Km). Should you be fit go for the 11.5Km.
Cost: Pay on the day (correct amount will be appreciated as we may not have change).

- PER ADULT: R 52 (R22 to be paid at the gate + R 30 for the hike to be paid at the hike starting point)
- PER CHILD: R21 (R 11 to be paid at the gate + R 10 for the hike to be paid at the hike starting point)
- R11 per vehicle (to be paid at the gate).
